A contract signing between Stadler U.S. and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) clears the way for the first hydrogen-powered passenger train to operate in the United States.

The agreement marks a major milestone in bringing zero-emission passenger rail technology to the U.S. The hydrogen-powered FLIRT H2 vehicle will be introduced in 2024 as part of the Redlands Passenger Rail Project, a nine-mile connector between Redlands and San Bernardino’s Metrolink station.

Since the contract signing on November 13, 2019, social media has been buzzing on the innovation being delivered by SBCTA and Stadler. More than 40 articles with an estimated potential reach of more than 52 million people have been shared more than 2,300 times worldwide. The names SBCTA and San Bernardino County have been seen in 11 countries - spanning North America, Europe, and Asia. SBCTA will see a reorganization of some agency operations in the coming months. The Board of Directors approved a staff proposal at their December 4th meeting to create a new Director level position and department at SBCTA. The new Director of Special Projects and Strategic Initiatives will oversee some critical short and long-term projects that will streamline systems and processes to improve the efficiency of the organization’s operations.
The laughter of children and a hearty “Ho, ho, ho,” will be heard aboard trains as Metrolink offers the Holiday Express Train for a family-friendly seasonal-themed experience on the San Bernardino Line on Sunday, December 15th.
SBCTA’s Mission Statement had not been updated since 1996. Since that time, SBCTA’s role in the county has evolved with the renewal of Measure I until 2040, legislation creating SBCTA as a statutory entity, the start of express lane projects, new state and federal transportation programs and priorities, among various other changes. Due to our agency’s evolving role, it was determined that our Mission Statement needed to be updated. 
The Inland Empire continues to be very active in the delivery of transportation infrastructure and innovation. This video that was shared at the California Transportation Commission meeting in Riverside on December 4th highlights the efforts of SBCTA, Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) and Caltrans as we collectively identify, develop, and deliver transportation improvements throughout the region
Metrolink riders traveling to Ontario International Airport (ONT) now have a new mobility option with sponsored Lyft rides from four Metrolink stations and Omnitrans transit centers thanks to a partnership with SBCTA.

Alan Wapner, President of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) who also serves on the Boards of Directors of Metrolink and SBCTA, described the partnership as an important next step in making sure ONT meets the needs of one of the fastest-growing population and economic centers in the United States.
