SBCTA, in partnership with the Alliance for Education, hosted a half day STEM session in December that provided San Bernardino County school instructors hands on information about the process used to design, demolish and construct the new Mt. Vernon Viaduct over the BNSF modal yard in San Bernardino.
The morning began with a brief introduction of the project, history of the Santa Fe Depot railyard, a tour of the project site, and ending with a Q & A with Project Engineers.
The goal of the workshop was for instructors to use this time to develop concepts to be taught in the classrooms and in return provide feedback to Project Engineers. Based on feedback, Project Engineers will then create a lesson plan to use on Nepris, an online tool that connects educators and learners with a network of industry professionals, virtually, bringing real world relevance and career exposure to students, a system that is being used in some of the school districts of San Bernardino County.
