Plans for an underground transit loop between the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station and Ontario International Airport (ONT) took a giant step forward on Wednesday when the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) Board authorized negotiations to begin with The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk.

Boring was the only company to respond to a recent Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to build the nearly four-mile tunnel, which will connect Metrolink’s busiest line with the nation’s fastest-growing airport three years running. The subterranean transit system would shuttle thousands of passengers per day between the Rancho Cucamonga station and ONT using zero-emission vehicles.
Construction on the new Arrow corridor is more than 80% complete with bridge construction almost 100% complete. Throughout the 9-mile corridor, crews are working to install signals; pave and reconstruct curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; install cabling for signals; and prepare for train testing. We recently received a video of the first Arrow train at the Stadler plant in Salt Lake City enjoying a little sunshine in anticipation of its new home. Beginning Spring 2021, once the trains arrive in California, SBCTA in collaboration with Metrolink, will begin train testing. Testing will occur throughout the 9-mile corridor and continue until Arrow service begins in 2022. Both Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) and Metrolink trains will be used during testing. On January 29, 2021, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), issued an Order requiring the wearing of masks by travelers to prevent spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. Conveyance operators must also require all persons onboard to wear masks when boarding, disembarking, and for the duration of travel. Operators of transportation hubs must require all persons to wear a mask when entering or on the premises of a transportation hub.

This Order must be followed by all passengers on public conveyances (e.g., airplanes, ships, ferries, trains, subways, buses, taxis, ride-shares) traveling into, within, or out of the United States as well as conveyance operators (e.g., crew, drivers, conductors, and other workers involved in the operation of conveyances) and operators of transportation hubs ( e.g., airports, bus or ferry terminals, train or subway stations, seaports, ports of entry) or any other area that provides transportation in the United States.

For more information on this Order, visit the CDC website.
On January 27th, 2021, Brightline West conducted a briefing with representatives from SBCTA, San Bernardino County, the City of Rancho Cucamonga and local stakeholders to outline their proposed plans to extend their high speed rail access from Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga.

Currently, Brightline West is completing the final approval processes for their Las Vegas to Victorville project and plans to begin construction later this year. Brightline is a privately operated express inter-city passenger rail system which began operating in Florida in January of 2018. It is currently the only privately owned and operated inter-city passenger railroad in the United States, and operates between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Plam Beach, with an expansion to Orlando under construction.
The I-10/University Street Improvement Project begins construction on Monday, February 8, 2021. Serving as the gateway for communities in eastern Redlands, the University of Redlands and Redlands High School, the project will improve traffic operations along University Street between Citrus Avenue and Central Avenue. After the impacts of the pandemic subside, it is expected that delay times experienced previously on the I-10/University Street westbound on-ramp and eastbound off-ramp, as well as on University Street between Citrus Avenue and Central Avenue, will return.

The project will widen the westbound I-10 on-ramp and the eastbound I-10 off-ramp. It will also restripe University Street from Citrus Avenue to Central Avenue. The I-10/University Street Improvement project is designed to relieve congestion, improve safety, and improve traffic flow as well as address the increased travel associated with existing and planned development in the City of Redlands. In addition, the project will upgrade pedestrian access via sidewalks and Americans with Disabilities Act compliant curb ramps. Be in the know before you go and download or bookmark the project’s interactive Google Map. The project-specific Google Map offers real-time closures and detours at the information. For more information, visit the project page.
As we enter that time of year where the hint of spring starts to reveal new flowers, longer days, and the aroma of ‘Thin Mints’ in the air, many of us look forward to those little boxes provided by the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Unfortunately, the largest entrepreneurship program for girls in the entire world is also victimized by the impacts of the pandemic.
