Interstate 10 Express Lanes (Contract 1) Moves Forward with Design/Build

The Interstate 10 Corridor Contract 1 Project reached another milestone this week as the project moves closer to construction.  The SBCTA Board of Directors voted to award a new contract to design and build the I-10 Corridor Contract 1 Project and a new contract to operate and maintain the Toll System.  The approval included an update to the funding plan of an additional $186.4 million in newly allocated Road Repair & Accountability Act (SB1) and other State funding sources.  These new grant funds, along with the restoration of some the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) funds lost in previous State budget years, may team with the potential funding from the pending Federal Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan to potentially alleviate the need for Measure I in this phase of the I-10 project.

The I-10 Corridor Contract 1 Project will provide relief to general purpose lanes on I-10 and offer reliable commute times within the new express lanes.  Furthermore, SBCTA will partner with State and local jurisdictions for additional improvements to four interchanges that will improve local circulation and reduce traffic.  Capitalizing on an effort to streamline much needed improvements to the mainline of I-10, SBCTA has partnered with Caltrans on pavement rehabilitation and safety lighting projects.  These strategic partnerships will reduce administrative costs for all agencies involved and minimize the impacts on local communities and motorists.

SBCTA Marked Opening of State Route 210 / Pepper Avenue Interchange in Rialto with Dedication Ceremony

Officials from SBCTA, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), City of Rialto and the County of San Bernardino gathered for a dedication ceremony on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 10 AM at Frisbee Park in the City of Rialto.

The new interchange to provides a connection between the recently extended Pepper Avenue and SR-210; offering a new option for commuting and moving goods through the region.

Construction began in March 2017 and is being completed in two phases. During Phase 1, the tight diamond shaped ramps were built with two lanes per ramp. Both the eastbound and westbound on-ramps include carpool lanes and ramp meters. Additional features of the project include the widening of Pepper Avenue to Highland Avenue and construction of retaining walls beneath the bridge.

Phase 1 was completed with the installation of traffic signals and the placement of an irrigation system and landscaping. To culminate the project, during Phase 2 the new ramps were connected to the Route 210 lanes and the roadway was restriped.

Funding for the $24.5 million project was provided by a combination of state, federal and local funds, including Measure I, the voter-approved half-cent sales tax for transportation projects in San Bernardino County.
