You are receiving this email because your organization is at one of the economic development tiers with the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce. As always, we encourage your comments and questions.
Good Afternoon, as you saw from my updates the last couple of months, there are some good things going on in our community.  I have got a few updates:

  • A developer has come forward expressing interest in developing a new subdivision in the community. He has local ties to the Alpena area and upon relocating back here struggled to find a home to purchase. His interest seems genuine. It remains to be seen if this project will come to fruition but most of us are aware of the need for additional housing. It will remain a challenge to get people to relocate here if they cannot find suitable housing options whether rentals or ownership. We are short on both. We will work hard to assist the developer to locate viable locations and hope that this project will make sense for them to pursue.
  • Progress continues on the new daycare/earning center. The former K of C hall’s transformation is nearly complete, and the owner is hoping to be open soon. They are waiting on the State of Michigan to approve their license. They are pursuing a license to handle up to 100 children. There are a few slots available for families seeking daycare for their children. Like housing, quality daycare is a must if we are going to make this area attractive for young families and further development.
  • The DDA and City both approved the establishment of a social district within the DDA. There are just over 41 social districts within the state across 25 different counties. Alpena is the first community in Northeast Michigan to pursue a social district. In the other communities where this has already been done, they have reported excellent results without any real downside. Any businesses with liquor licenses within the DDA can apply with Michigan liquor control to participate. They hope to have it in place early into the tourist season.
  • In other DDA news, it was great to see Glik’s open on May 7th. Their new location in Harborside Center looks great and will help to drive more activity into the downtown area.

Last week the American Rescue Plan information was released. This act provides a total of $350 billion in Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to help eligible state, local, territorial, and Tribal governments meet their present needs and build the foundation for a strong recovery. Congress has allocated this funding to tens of thousands of jurisdictions.

Most of us want to know what this means for Michigan and of course Alpena County, the City of Alpena, and the local townships. The State of Michigan will receive $6.5 billion. Beyond that, cities and counties will also receive financial support. Towns and Townships also will receive funding, but the amounts are unknown at the time of this update. Already announced local funding:

  • Alpena County - $5,517,338
  • Alcona County - $2,021,049
  • Presque Isle County - $2,445,848

Thank you for your time and support of our mission.

Be well, stay well,
Mike
