honor yourself
|
|
Often, I find myself woofing down breakfast or lunch standing at the kitchen counter. Wait, could I not take 5 minutes to honor my health and sit down to take a break and focus on my meal?
No standing to eat. Let's sit, calm down, take a break, take a breath, take a bite. Honor your meal.
I find myself speeding down the road to make it to my destination on time. Sometimes I even exit the house with shoes in hand and toss them in the passenger seat. At red lights, there I am, lacing my pickleball sneakers or buckling my sandals on the way to a hair appointment.
STOP! No speeding. No rushing. Let's calm down, take a breath, take your foot off the accelerator. Honor your safety.
Some days I find myself agreeing to YES when I need or should say, "No, I cannot do that." Can I not remember it is no carnival to overbook, overdo, overcommit?
No piling it on. Take a beat after a request is asked of you. Think it through. Say no when you must. Honor your time.
Then there are the times I am mindfully eating non-nutritional food. Like during my last week in Florida, which consisted of Cool Ranch Doritos, ice cream, French Fries, Kraft Mac 'n Cheese, and Kookaburra licorice. (Can you tell my 3 grandkiddies were visiting?)
No-no. Focus on, and respect, healthier food. Let's watch quantity. Let's be mindful of excess. Honor your body.
Snippeteers, let us honor our meals, our safety, our time. Adding to those, let us honor our ideas ... our space ... our possessions ... our wishes ... our dreams ... our preferences.
Honor yourself.

"I agree!"
~ Barbara S.
"You hit the nail on the head with this one! I've even witnessed parents ignoring their children to focus on their phone. I love your approach of stopping your conversation when someone starts looking at their phone. We have to do better."
~ Melanie in Marriottsville, Maryland
"I agree it's terrible when people are on their phones while with others - be with who you are with! I also agree people in general are on their phones wayyyyy toooo much!!! But you should not judge the girls on the beach on their phones who may have been playing, laughing, and taking selfies for hours, and maybe just sat down to veg out for a while. Or the walking couple who may have been talking for an hour, then decided to check their phones. We should never judge unless we know the whole story; we never know what else has been going on. Even if we think we know, there is always 3 sides to a story: yours, mine, and the actual truth."
~ Debbie S in Fallston, Maryland
"I did exactly as you were saying. I stopped talking and said, 'I’ll wait until you finish!' Love your posts."
~ Margaret in Hunt Valley, Maryland
"Friend / family member / coworker or phone ... so spot on with this one!"
~ Theresa in Fallston, Maryland
"Sometimes Grandmom's visit is not a visit at all. Cell phones can’t reach heaven - and Grandmom is heading there at some point."
~ Nancy in Baltimore, Maryland
"Spot on with friend or phone!!!"
~ Mindy in New Jersey
"This snippet was exceptional!!!! I totally agree with how everyone pays more attention to their phone than the person they are with. I am really going to remember this when I am out with a friend. Also, I really liked the donkey story. I look forward to reading my SNIPPETS. Thank you for all the good advice."
~ Joyce in Delaware
donkey in the well story ...
"Great story!! One we all need to follow ... can’t let them get you down ... shake it off. Love SNIPPETS."
~ Judy in Ohio
"Every day I send a group of people a chuckle or something I've read. So I copied your story about the donkey to send to them! Talk about a story with a moral! Thanks for sharing."
~ Joanne in New York

An frazzled woman runs into the vet's office holding her pet duck. "Doctor, doctor, what's wrong with my duck???"
The doctor looks at the animal, jostles it around, turns it over, then shakes his head. "Lady, your duck is dead. That is a very dead duck."
"Dead? My Dolores is dead?" She shakes her head. "No way. Unacceptable. I want a second opinion!"
So the doctor calls in a black lab. The lab examines the duck, looks at the doctor, shakes his head, and walks out.
Next he calls in a cat. The cat examines the duck, looks at the doctor, shakes its head, and walks out.
"Just as I thought, lady," says the vet. "Dead. Very dead. Dead duck. Here's your bill."
The lady is shocked at the bill. "Wait a second, you mean I have to pay $220 for you to tell me my duck is dead?"
"Well, it would have been only $20," said the doctor, "but then you required a second opinion. So, that's $100 for the lab report and $100 for the cat scan."
