ICN Group Training
FREE virtual and face-to-face group trainings are offered on a broad range of topics for child nutrition professionals working in school nutrition and child care settings. Training may be requested free of charge and must be requested at least 8–10 weeks before the training date.
iLearn

Self-paced, free online learning for child nutrition professionals is offered through iLearn. Users have the flexibility to complete courses or view webinars over multiple sessions on desktop, laptop, or mobile devices. Courses align with USDA’s Professional Standards Codes and SNA Key Areas. Learners can also tailor their experience to a particular area of interest.

ICN Resources
Focused on nutrition and wellness in child care settings, Mealtime Memo is a monthly electronic newsletter specifically intended for use by child care professionals who participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). It provides research-based best practices for planning, preparing, and/or serving nutritious, safe, and child-friendly meals in child care settings operating the CACFP.

Shaking It Up! Small Changes Lead to Big Flavors
The Shaking It Up! sodium resources provide tangible, practical guidance for school nutrition professionals to implement sodium reduction best practices and strategies in their school foodservice operations. Also available are sodium training worksheets, which provide a deep dive into sodium reduction topics and related strategies, feature scenarios or school success stories to demonstrate sodium reduction best practices, and activities to test and reinforce key concepts.

Child Nutrition Leadership Site
The Child Nutrition Leadership Site is designed to empower, educate, and elevate child nutrition professionals. Leadership is the ability to influence others toward a common goal. A leader can be anyone who aspires to lead their team in meeting their goal of feeding our nation’s children. The CNLS is a one-stop-shop for ICN’s leadership-driven resources.

The ICN Leadership Job Aid Series is based on relevant leadership topics and focuses on skills that child nutrition leaders need to perform their job duties. The ICN Chat and Learn Series is a monthly live virtual conversation. The USDA Recipe Standardization Guide for School Nutrition Programs is a “how-to” guide on recipe standardization for school nutrition recipe developers. The guide describes recipe standardization techniques in detail and includes examples, practice exercises, and reference materials. It is designed to be a complete source of information on recipe standardization from conception to implementation of a recipe.

A Look Ahead
The week of October 24–28, 2022, is an exciting time for the Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN). The Culinary Institute of Child Nutrition (CICN) will host its Advisory Board members Monday–Tuesday, and the annual National Advisory Council (NAC) meeting for ICN will follow, beginning on Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. A Strategic Planning meeting Thursday–Friday will wrap up the week of planning ICN’s continued growth and development. All meetings will be held at ICN’s headquarters on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, MS. Continue reading for more information about these events.
The Institute of Child Nutrition National Advisory Council (NAC) Meeting will be held at ICN’s headquarters located on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, MS. ICN will utilize its NAC to assess the current school nutrition landscape and gather recommendations on addressing current challenges impacting school nutrition operators and State agencies. During this meeting, ICN and NAC members will analyze the current school nutrition environment and the challenges affecting operators. They will examine the operational challenges of established best practices and alternative solutions for schools and State agencies. They will also work to identify current training technical assistance, resource needs of school nutrition professionals, and effective marketing and promotional strategies to enhance the exposure and distribution of ICN’s resources.
The Culinary Institute of Child Nutrition (CICN) will host the fourth annual CICN Advisory Board Meeting at ICN’s headquarters located on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, MS. This meeting will bring together key stakeholders with a mission to increase the culinary capacity of Child Nutrition Programs (CNPs) across the nation. A critical work of the CICN Advisory Board, comprised of a diverse group of child nutrition professionals and highly skilled culinarians, is to provide guidance and direction as the CICN initiative continues to develop. The advisory board meets annually to advise the CICN on initiative activities, training curriculum, and resource development, including providing guidance and direction on developing a professional pipeline for culinarians in child nutrition. This meeting will serve as the basis for developing the next Statement of Work for the CICN and directing the continued evolution of the CICN initiative.
