iTRACE UNIVERSITY
THE ONLINE LEARNING PROGRAM FROM TRACEY TECHNOLOGIES
Greetings!

Mayo Clinic's Dr. Mike Mahr wondered what kind of information could be gleaned by analyzing iTrace data from Mayo's thousands of patients. In today's iTrace U session, Dr. Mahr presents his very interesting findings from this study. His work centering on the Angle Alpha findings was recently published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery , March 2020.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN THIS TEACHING:
  • Do you know what the Average Angle Alpha and Angle Kappa are?
  • Do you think about the DLI being the right metric to decide when to remove a cataract?
  • Look for the improvement in DLI from pre to post in this big study. Do you agree earlier cataract removal seems justified by the improved vision?

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHILE YOU ARE WATCHING:
  • Regardless of what cutoff number you use, most doctors are taking notice of optical alignment and High Order Aberrations (HOAs). What is your thought process in suggesting Depth of Focus or Trifocal type lenses? Do you have a specific screening criteria?
  • The numbers presented here are from almost 30,000 iTrace scans. Do you feel these metrics ring true in your experience? Are there conclusions from this data that surprise you?

THINGS TO CONSIDER STUDYING IN YOUR PRACTICE:
Try to duplicate some of the material studied at Mayo Clinic. Do you get the same averages?
