Greetings!
Today’s session in the iTrace U Program is a
video
that describes how surgeons can use the Corneal MTF graph in the iTrace software to screen patients who are possible Multifocal IOL candidates. This simple graph can help you improve your success rate with MFIOLs. You'll understand the graph much better after this quick explanation.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN THIS TEACHING:
- Corneal optics need to be really good pre-op before you decide to implant a Multifocal.
- Contrast as measured by the MTF is a good indicator of the overall quality of vision coming from the cornea.
- Most multifocal lenses are low contrast, so if you want to average a good MTF score in the total eye, you need a really good score from the Cornea so that the average is acceptable.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHILE YOU ARE WATCHING:
- What is your screening protocol for Corneal Optics when considering a multifocal?
- How closely do you scrutinize Post-Refractive cases for corneal optics?
- If post-refractive patients refract crisply, is that enough? HINT- NO! They may have lens compensation going on that masks how bad the cornea is.
- If your patient is dry eyed, but wants a multifocal, what is your protocol?
THINGS TO CONSIDER STUDYING IN YOUR PRACTICE:
- What is the average MTF of the total eye in my happy patients in each major type of IOL you use?
- For those patients that are unhappy with their vision after surgery, what is the average MTF?
