We Saxons are always ready for a challenge! The Fairfax County PTA and the League of Women Voters have joined forces
to promote high school voter registration through an
FCPS High School Registration Challenge. Let’s get our qualifying Saxon students to register and take on their adult responsibilities at the first available opportunity! Not only can
all 18-year-olds register, but if your 17-year-old turns 18 before Nov 5, 2019,
they can register now and vote in any primaries and special elections immediately.
|
|
Registration couldn’t be easier.
If you have a VA license or permit,
voter registration may be completed online in a few minutes.
Have your 17- or 18-year-old register today via this Langley voter registration
link
. See more details regarding the voter challenge and registration
here
.
The FCPS school with the highest percentage of registered seniors wins, but
the real winners are our students,
who are encouraged to engage in their civic rights as adults.
Our Langley students are informed and intelligent,
so let their voices be heard!
Saxons, register to vote!

What are people having engraved on their Langley Legacy Tree Courtyard Fundraiser leaves? It's a question we've been asked a lot lately. While some are all business,
"Ace Deli Supports Langley" or sentimental,
"So proud of you, Kiki!" most look something like this:
|
|
Feel free to get creative! Whatever you choose to inscribe on the leaves or acorn you purchase for our
Courtyard Fundraising Campaign, your engraved leaves
(copper leaf $50, silver leaf $100, gold leaf $200, acorn $500) will be on permanent and prominent display as part of the
Langley Legacy Tree, a beautiful wall sculpture that will soon be in Langley's front entryway.
|
|
But please act quickly!
Our goal is for
Wheat's Landscaping
to begin planting Langley's three courtyards this spring. The completed project --
which includes trees, a pond, a sensory garden, a rock garden, and dozens of ways to incorporate hands-on, experiential learning
-- will require the donation of many, many Legacy Tree leaves to bring to fruition.
Visit the
PTSA website
for
more information and to order.

FCPS has created a student-focused
website that provides information about
vaping risks, resources, and videos featuring FCPS students. Many students believe e-cigarettes are harmless, but that is not true. Most e-cigarettes contain
nicotine, which is
highly addictive and can impact adolescent brain development beyond the teen years. Some e-cigarettes also contain other
harmful chemicals. While usage is primarily seen at the high school level, middle school students are also engaging in this harmful activity.
FCPS encourages all parents to become better informed about this subject and to discuss the issue with your students, as appropriate.
Get started with these
tips from the Surgeon General and click
here for more
parent information.

All teens experience some amount of anxiety. But when temporary worries or fears interfere with daily life,
anxiety disorders are at play. How can our community recognize the signs of this mental health epidemic and what resources are available? The
Safe Community Coalition, in conjunction with the
Langley PTSA, is hosting a free showing of
Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety on
Thurs, Feb 28 at 7 pm in the Langley Auditorium. This documentary features students affected by anxiety, mental health professionals and
Olympian Michael Phelps in opening up the conversation around this topic.
Following the movie, a
panel discussion and Q&A session will provide further info. This event is
free and recommended for adults and students in
6th grade and up.
