from the ptsa president
As the spring weather continues to warm, the lush landscaping in the Main Courtyard makes Langley High School an even more inviting place to be.

Thanks to the generous donations of Langley families and local organizations, the Langley Legacy Tree in the Main Hall is almost complete. The Main Courtyard is a Langley centerpiece now that it is filled with green grass and trees. The umbrellas installed around the courtyard tables will provide students with lunchtime shade in the weeks ahead. The second courtyard near the science hall is filled with vegetation making it an inviting place for classroom time. In coming years, the third courtyard, which was part of the original PTSA landscape plan, is going to be outfitted by FCPS as an outdoor classroom.

As the courtyard project is wrapping up, this is the last opportunity to purchase a leaf or two to adorn the beautiful Langley Legacy Tree. Your purchase will support the final additions and ongoing maintenance of the Langley courtyards and make lasting gifts for your graduate, a special teacher, a coach or mentor. Read below for the details on how to give a leaf, acorn, or bird.

~ Jamie H. Loving, PTSA President
last call for a leaf!
Time is running out to order your leaf for Langley's Legacy Tree. This courtyard fundraiser is wrapping up. Orders for the Legacy Tree will continue only through the end of this school year. No leaf orders will be accepted next year. If you would like to order a leaf for the tree, now is the time!

Consider helping to "grow" the Legacy Tree and complete the courtyard renovation project by donating a leaf (copper $50, silver $100, gold $200), and bird or acorn ($500). You choose the engraved message!
The Legacy Tree is a permanent, prominent record of courtyard contributors and a lasting legacy for Langley and your family. Leaves also make great tributes to teachers, friends, coaches, and grads!

To order your leaf -- or leaves! -- visit the PTSA website.

student peace award: Congratulations to Langley’s own Bree Yagana, who has been named one of the recipients of the 2023 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County. The awards are designed to recognize young people who work as peacemakers.

Every year, high schools in Fairfax County are asked to select one junior or senior, or a group of students, whose work has promoted peace. The project is organized by volunteers and funded by donations from 17 secular and religious sponsoring organizations.

Bree has been involved in helping refugees since she was a freshman in high school. That year she volunteered with the International Rescue Committee and began remote Zoom sessions with young refugees to help with homework, college preparation and cultural assimilation. She then founded her own English language and cultural assimilation program with the objective of easing potential culture shocks and language barriers for refugees.

Read more about the Fairfax County Peace Awards here.
madrigals win prestigious grant: The Langley High School Madrigals, under the direction of Caroline Player, auditioned against many local high schools and were selected as this year’s winner of the Alexandria Choral Society’s Sing-Off Grant. They received $1,000 towards their choir program and represented Langley in a collaborative performance this past weekend with the Alexandria Choral Society (ACS). They performed two pieces by themselves and then sang a world premiere of a piece called “You Birth the Seeds” that was written specifically for this event with the ACS. This new composition had text written by the City of Alexandria’s Poet Laureate Zeina Azzam and was set to music by esteemed Australian-American composer Melissa Dunphy. Congratulations to the Langley Choir program!
model judiciary club places first: Congratulations to the following Langley Model Judiciary Club teams of Hannah Abraham and Arjun Atraya, Jayden Lee and Anniyah Rizvi and Tracy Gong and Jihea So, who participated in the Model Judiciary Program’s Virginia Supreme Court Moot Court event sponsored by the YMCA and the Virginia Bar Association.

The event was held at the Virginia Supreme Court in Richmond on Apr 25. In addition to presenting complex legal arguments, students were challenged to answer probing questions from a panel of Virginia’s Supreme Court Justices. Langley competed against seven other high schools selected from five regional competitions. Langley tied for first place in the event!
final opp for strategic plan feedback
FCPS has almost completed the process of drafting a new Strategic Plan, which will guide our school division in the years ahead.

Now is your chance to participate in a brief survey regarding final input on the Strategic Plan’s draft goals, measures, and pillars. The goals are what we want for all students and the measures are how we will determine our progress in reaching those goals. The pillars are the things that FCPS must do well to reach our goals. Your voice matters! Click here to learn more about the strategic planning process and here to take the survey by May 17.

book drive
Do you have gently used children’s books to donate? Langley senior Alex Pomper, founder of Give a Kid a Book, is looking to collect children’s books for local charities. Bilingual books, board books and books for early readers are especially appreciated.

Since 2021, Alex has collected more than 8,400 books for organizations such as the Latin American Youth Center, Second Story (a youth shelter), and the United Way. Last spring, he donated over 800 books to Dogwood ES. Twice a month, he and his brother, Langley freshman Elliot Pomper, run a book giveaway for clients of the Arlington Food Assistance Center, a food bank in south Arlington.

If you have gently used children's books you'd like to donate, email Alex at alexpomper1@gmail.com to schedule a home pickup or visit giveakidabook.org
teacher appreciation week luncheon
With the theme of Cinco de Mayo, the entire Langley staff was treated to a delicious and festive Teacher Appreciation Week luncheon. The PTSA Hospitality Committee coordinated the fantastic luncheon. Themed decorations including cactus plants, sombreros and maracas beautifully transformed the front entrance hallway. Festive music played in the background as the staff enjoyed a buffet from Anita's and gift cards. The luncheon was intended to be a relaxing event for teachers and staff during AP and SOL testing.

Thank you to the Hospitality and Appreciation Committees of Kristi West, Rina Kaul, Kristin Simko, Catherine Macleod, Elina Dimitropoulos, Shibha Arora, Marisha Patel, Amy Adams, Clare Bradshaw, Joy Hohenthaner, Sara Koenig, Sloan Dosser and all our Langley Bakers for making this luncheon a success! To our amazing staff, thank you for sharing your talents, energy, and enthusiasm with our community.
