MAY DAY, MAY DAY! (in a good way)
Since living in Newport, I've become intrigued by our local history-- on every walk, run or ride around town, I appreciate the character and landmarks of each neighborhood and imagine walking in the footsteps of predeceasing Colonial, Victorian and Gilded residents. Newport itself inspires my historical daydreams and I suspect that many of you share them with me. Lucky for us, our numerous historically-minded organizations offer frequent programs of interest-- each one expands and colors my imaginings with fascinating details and though-provoking perspectives. In
local legends,
I list this month's programs, each is sure to enrich the experience of living in our incomparable, beloved City by the Sea.
And speaking of the sea... the Volvo Ocean Race fleet is NOW racing toward Newport - details below in blue view.
Hooray for May!

Here they come-- The Volvo Ocean Race is speeding toward Newport! As I write our hometown team, Vestas is leading the tightly packed fleet of VO65s. The Race Village Opening at Fort Adams will be held on 5/8, with the first boat arrivals anticipated on 5/11. During the Newport Stopover, The Race Village (<Village map link) is THE place to be in the City-by-the Sea. In addition to getting an up-close look at the Volvo 65s, there are many free activities for the entire family including the Race Boat Experience, One Ocean Exploration Zone, The Globe, Team Bases, The Boatyard, Grinding Challenge, Virtual Reality, Kid Zone, Live Music, Dock Parties and more.
Both the In-Port Race on 5/19 and the Leg 9 Restart to Cardiff on 5/20, may be viewed from Fort Adams.
