from the ptsa president
Welcome Saxon Families! It may be the first week of school, but the PTSA is doing everything we can to get you off to a strong start in Saxon Country. Last Thursday, the PTSA Family Network Committee, administrators, and class parents welcomed freshman and transfer families with an orientation program designed to ease their transition to LHS

Even if you are not new to LHS, I encourage you to review the PTSA Back-to-School packet, which contains grade-specific information such as the deadlines for ordering Homecoming t-shirts and paying class activity fees. It also contains information about the Reflections Art Contest (entries are due on Oct 27), clubs, and organizations you and your student can join, as well as a parent start-up guide with website links and “must do’s.” Be sure to see the FCPS Required and Opt-Out forms in the LHS website as well as log on to SIS ParentVUE to update and sign FCPS forms, such as Consent for Digital Resources and SR&R Parent Signature Forms.

Be sure to check the Langley and PTSA calendars throughout the year for event dates and times that will help you connect to the Langley community. For example, the PTSA will host a New Family Forum on Thurs, Aug 31 at 9-10 am. Come out, show your Saxon Spirit and “Paint it Out” at the Family Tailgate Party on Fri, Sept 8 when the varsity football team faces off against Edison HS. Mark your calendar for the first General Membership Meeting on Tue, Sept 12 at 5 pm, before Back to School Night at 6 pm.

Finally, fill the stands and support our fall athletes! Our volleyball, field hockey, cross country, golf, and football players are already competing. In addition, when you go to football games you will also get to watch our terrific marching band, cheerleaders, and dance team. Visit the Langley Athletics website for more information.

It is going to be a great year in Saxon Country! Hail Saxons!

~ Joy Hohenthaner, PTSA President

parenting essentials to start the year strong
The Safe Community Coalition, in partnership with the Temple Rodef Shalom, is proud to host the authors of Raising A Kid Who Can, an event that is sure to help parents - and kids - start the new school year off strong!

This book launch and speaker event features three McLean-based parenting experts - a child psychiatrist, a parent psychologist, and a child therapist - who have spent years distilling the latest parenting science and best practices to answer the complex question: Based on all that modern science has to offer, what are the most important things I should try to do in raising my kid?

This meet-the-authors event takes place Wed, Sept 13 at Temple Rodef Shalom (2100 Westmoreland St.). The Presentation and Q&A is 7-8:30 pm with Book Signing immediately afterward. Books will be available for sale at the event.

See the flyer here. More info and registration for this event can be found here.
school bus safety
Parents and student drivers! Take a few moments to review school bus safety here at the beginning of the school year.

Drivers must stop in both directions when a stopped school bus is loading or unloading children, unless separated from the bus by a median. When there is a median, all lanes of traffic following the bus must stop (see configuration 4 in the diagram). It is considered reckless driving - a criminal offense - if you pass a stopped school bus unloading children.

See more about back to school safety on the FCPS website. We all help students arrive at school and back home safely each day.
