3 things to know

1. Do you have questions for our school board member? The PTSA will host our Dranesville School Board Representative Robyn Lady, at our Mar 26 general meeting at 9 am. Join us for 8:30 am coffee and 9 am for the meeting. Submit any questions or issues you'd like her to discuss by using this form.

2. Are you interested in helping Langley PTSA? We are looking for a few new faces to do a variety of roles, some big, some small. Contact Sara Koenig at saranapkoenig@gmail.com if you have any interest or would like to learn more about getting involved.

3. Parking at Langley? Parents, as you've read, Langley is increasing parking enforcement and ticketing cars without permits. If you come to campus to volunteer or meet with a staff member, ideally park in one of the designated visitor parking spots. Unfortunately kids are using those as well, so if you park elsewhere and receive a ticket, the easiest thing to do is immediately bring it to the front desk. Remember to always check in at the main office when you arrive, so the wonderful front office staff will be able to take care of a ticket.

purple up

April is the Month of the Military Child! This month-long celebration of FCPS military-connected students raises awareness and recognizes the resilience of military-connected youth and thanks them for their service as part of a military family. Apr 9 is designated as “Purple Up!” Day and everyone is encouraged to wear purple (the combination of all the military service branch colors) to celebrate and thank our military-connected students for their service. On Apr 9, Langley HS will recognize our military connected students in the Lecture Hall during Saxon Time with a Chick-Fil-A brunch sponsored by the PTSA. Parents are welcome too. Parents and students RSVP to LHS Family Liaison Julie Zimmerman Hohl at jbzimmerman@fcps.edu if you can attend.

Join LHS Psychologist Anna Brown and Social Worker Jordan Payne for an engaging parent conversation on Jennifer Wallace’s book, Never Enough. Never Enough “takes readers on a journey into the heart of toxic achievement culture and offers practical, actionable solutions for families, schools and communities.”

Wallace concludes that “kids who receive feedback that they matter, no matter what, are more likely to have the resilience, self-confidence and psychological security to survive.” Jennifer Wallace is an award-winning journalist who began her career at 60 Minutes and contributes to the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. Mark your calendar for Fri, Mar 28 at 9 am in the Lecture Hall

RSVP to LHS Family Liaison Julie Zimmerman Hohl at jbzimmerman@fcps.edu if you are able to attend.

sports notes

baseball field: Play Ball! The new baseball head coach, Rob Hahne (Langley class of ’87), projected a vision of how the field and facilities could be improved with some investment. The student activities office, parents, boosters and corporate sponsorships responded enthusiastically. Thirty four parents of current and former baseball players contributed $98K as part of a total raise of about $160K in the last 6 months. Highlights of the improvements are a state-of-the-art player development center with 6,000 sq. ft. of artificial turf practice space, an enhanced pavilion with new netting and windscreens and new hitting bay stations. In addition, the playing field was improved with a new pitcher’s mound and leveling of the infield. Come out to see some games and check out all the improvements!

student opps

Looking for volunteer or other opportunities? PTSA volunteers maintain this running list of opportunities for our students. The Service and Jobs Opportunities Committee's goal is to help connect students to summer internships, jobs and volunteer opportunities to fulfill community service requirements, gain job experience and explore career paths.

bus safety

Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 of our school buses to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”). Warnings for drivers will begin on Wed, Apr 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Mon, May 12.

FCPS appreciates its collaboration with local law enforcement partners to improve road safety and reduce accidents. More information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that FCPS works with county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school can be found on this webpage.
