Talk about March madness! These final few days of the month—and the marking period—have been filled with a flurry of activities. Here’s a glimpse of some of the events our students and volunteers enjoyed this past week.

Another successful Saxon Service event was held last Thursday. Students participated in new crafts that included knitting scarves for local shelter residents and creating plush toys for children in African refugee camps, as well as previous favorites like decorating note cards for active military and ironing colorful pillowcases for hospitalized children. Remember, to receive community service credit, students need to record their service hours in x2vol. Seniors must write their reflections and record their hours (just 20 required this year) by Fri, April 22 to earn the community service cord for graduation.

Thursday evening, Langley Hall was transformed into the DIVERSEartLangley gallery featuring the photographs, paintings, collages, poems, essays and music of our Langley students. Thank you to all of the students who shared their creativity, insights and experiences with the attendees, and to DEI committee chairs Heather Murphy Capps and Stefanie Stayin for planning, promoting and emceeing this inspiring event.

|
Thank you to New Family Network committee member Kelli Baker who brought Langley parents together over lunch at the 9292 Korean BBQ restaurant on Friday. This was the latest in a series of informative and social events organized by the New Family Network to ease the transition of families new to FCPS into our Langley HS community.

The Legacy Tree has grown thanks to the generosity of our Langley families, teachers, staff and alumni. All purchases of custom birds, acorns and leaves support the landscaping and maintenance of the three Langley courtyards. Thank you to Courtyard and Landscape Liaison Chrissie Lavin for securing a new fabricator and restarting the production of these lasting memorials.

Despite the unseasonably cold temperature, high winds and snow flurries on Sunday, the Langley Community Yard Sale and Craft Fair successfully raised money to offset some of the costs of the All Night Grad Party. Those in attendance enjoyed a visit by Otto and performances by members of the Langley band as well as music and fun supplied by the owner of Uncle Fred’s BBQ. Thank you to all of the vendors who rented spaces and the shoppers who supported them, as well as the student and parent volunteers who bundled up and pitched in to help. A sincere thank you goes to ANGP Fundraising chair Annette Bellino for creating, advertising and organizing what we hope will become an annual community event.
I hope you include some time for rest and rejuvenation however you plan to spend your Spring Break. See you in April!
~ Clare Bradshaw, PTSA President

To everyone who participated in, volunteered with, or attended the ANGP-sponsored Community Outdoor Yard Sale & Craft Fair Fundraiser this past Sunday, thank you. To the band members who came out to liven up the day with their mini performances, a special thank you. To the many families who donated yummy treats to the ANGP bake sale, which was a big money-maker, thank you.
Congratulations to Karen Deardorff for winning the 50/50 raffle . . . and then donating her winnings back to the ANGP. Her generosity is very much appreciated!
Fifty local businesses and artisans participated, and three food trucks kept everyone well fed. See the list of vendors here or here and let them know you heard that they participated in the Community Outdoor Yard Sale & Craft Fair at Langley.
A big thank you to Robyn Smith for collecting items that vendors wanted to donate at the end of the event. Several carloads of clothes, toys, books, and household items were taken to our local food pantry SHARE of McLean.

Student Services needs parent volunteers to help in administering AP testing from May 2-13. You will be paired with a knowledgeable member of the Student Services team and only be tasked with assisting in handing out and collecting materials and supervising the test. Test proctoring runs about 4 hours per test, and the exams generally begin at 8 am and 12 pm.
You can see how AP tests are administered and get to know some of our student services staff better. The only rule is that you can’t proctor a test your student is taking. Sign up here.
Because of the vast amount of testing done in the building, every proctor is greatly appreciated!

Congratulations to the Langley Mock Trial Team, part of the Langley Model Judiciary Club, for their success in a long and grueling four-round, two-day tournament against strong competition from schools across the state during the Mar 19-20 weekend. Langley placed 14th overall in the tournament and second among the FCPS teams that competed.
Ivy Chen and Selina Al-Shihabi (defense attorney team), Anh-Thu Pham and Travis Martin (prosecution attorney team) led the teams with well-prepared cases to support their positions in a complex medical malpractice case.
Samantha Kenney, Peyton Walcott, Lianna Hong, Cristina Pak, Jayden Lee and Maanav Shah played well-crafted witness roles that received many positive comments from tournament judges.
This was Langley's first year in the state competition. The team gained valuable experience. Half of the team will return next year for the 2023 competition and will take advantage of the skills gained this year. The Mock Trial Team is coached by Mrs. McCommas.

last call for legacy tree plaque donors
|
|
Those who donate $1,000 or more by the end of the month will be included on the Courtyard Benefactor Plaque, which will be adjacent to the Legacy Tree. Your contribution of $1,000 includes your choice of six gold leaves or two birds or acorns.
If you have a graduating senior, now's the time to order your leaf to ensure it will be up on the Legacy Tree before the end of the school year.
Thanks to the 528 generous Langley families who've donated a leaf to make the renovation of the first two of Langley's three courtyards possible.
One more courtyard to landscape! Consider helping to "grow" the Legacy Tree and complete the courtyard renovation project by donating a leaf (copper $50, silver $100, gold $200) or bird or acorn ($500). You choose the engraved message. The Legacy Tree is a permanent, prominent record of courtyard contributors and a lasting legacy for Langley and your family. Leaves also make great tributes to teachers, friends, coaches, and grads!
