april 2024

Dear Marlo,

Happy days are here again as spring has officially sprung. And we've got three fun suggestions, below, to get you even more excited for everyone's favorite season!

For any of you who remember the epic Marathon parties we used to throw, read on for how you can join us to recreate those festivities while raising $ for a downtown restaurant struggling to hold on post-pandemic. Learn about a new product that's been around - virtually untouched - for centuries that's good for you AND the environment. And get ready to do some spring cleaning - who knew clearing out those junk drawers could help gorillas in the wild?!

Speaking of spring, our 20th Anniversary Instagram giveaway this month shows it in spades far and loud: How about a pair of Red Sox tickets behind home plate + dinner at Eastern Standard? It's going live - you guessed it - April 20, so follow @marlomarketing and get ready to start the season off right!

April means many things: the start of baseball season, the thawing of winter and, in Boston, the iconic Boston Marathon. For many years, the marlo offices were located at the race's finish line, and our Marathon parties were the stuff of legends, drawing a wide variety of friends, clients, and local notables. Over time these fetes also became known for their expansive Mexican spread and frozen marg machine. While we enjoyed many a festive celebration, it goes without saying that the 2013 bombing cast a shadow on an annual tradition for so many. However, during those dark days when we lost access to our office temporarily as the investigation unfolded, we relied upon the kindness of our community to step in and provide solace – and physical office space (remember when that was a thing?!) – when we needed it most. Specifically, startup incubator MassChallenge opened up their office in the Seaport while we were displaced and for that we will always be grateful. When we moved to bigger digs in Downtown Crossing in 2014, we left our Marathon party behind…but this year are thrilled to resurrect it for one night only to help out a financial district restaurant that is struggling to survive due to the drastic reduction of foot traffic from office workers.

Also celebrating a milestone anniversary this year, Villa México Café has spent the past 25 years offering authentic, homemade Mexican food. This family-run business has added to the rich culinary tapestry of our city for more than two decades and, after reading about their plight in the Boston Business Journal, it was clear to us that they’d be the perfect match for our revived Marathon party Mexican feast.

For this studio series, we’ve also partnered with InnoCrew, whose mission is to empower and support early-stage founders through monthly events, genuine relationship-building, and authentic conversations. In the spirit of supporting the community of entrepreneurs and startups that was there for us in those dark days, we couldn't think of a better co-host to lend a hand to a struggling member of our community.

So join us and InnoCrew for an all-you-can-eat taco extravaganza with all proceeds going directly to Villa Mexico. In addition to tacos, they'll be selling their famous homemade salsa and also offering $150 gift certs to host a taco party of your very own for only $125 if purchased that evening. And yes, there will be a frozen marg machine!

revival einkorn

As we pay homage this month to the baddest mother out there - Mother Earth, of course - we’d be remiss not to shout out those who are making it their mission to provide sustainable food options for the world's greater good. Enter Revival Einkorn, the game-changing brand bringing earth's first strain of wheat - einkorn - back to the masses through its nutrient-rich, never hybridized, organic, and sustainably farmed lines of European wheat crackers and pastas. That's right, these folks have found a way to resurface a staple in early human diets, presenting great tasting wheat as nature intended. Sign. Us. Up.

And not to get all Bill Nye The Science Guy on you, but Revival Einkorn also boasts the simplest diploid gluten (Gluten AA) and lowest antigen levels compared to any hybridized wheat on the market, making it much easier for the human body to digest. Translation: those with gluten sensitivities (we see you) rejoice!

Currently available at fine retailers throughout Southern California (the likes of Erewhon, natch. IYKYK.) and nationwide via direct shipping, Revival Einkorn is sure to soon be a go-to staple in your kitchen whether on Earth Day - or any day.

zoo new england

If you’re like us, spring cleaning usually isn’t very high on your list of fave seasonal activities…after all, we’d much rather be picnic-ing in the park in our cute new coatigan, thankyouverymuch. But this year we’ve stumbled on a way to make an annual chore matter so much more.

Did you know that dumping out that dreaded junk drawer (you know the one) overflowing with cords and old cellphones won’t just declutter your home, it can also help preserve gorillas around the world? Many electronic devices contain coltan, a material mined from the natural habitat of gorillas - destroying their environments in the process of that mining - and causing gorilla numbers in the wild to rapidly decline.

Enter our friends at Zoo New England who are once again participating in the “Gorillas on the Line” campaign which invites people to recycle old cell phones and other electronic devices in drop boxes located at both Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo. Recycled electronics reduce the demand for mining new coltan, ultimately helping to preserve the gorilla ecosystem.

In other words, goodbye dusty iPhone7 and hello happy gorillas!
