WOW this is a big one. And here's a late-breaking news tip: If you're wondering what happened to the prairie habitat at Crawford Commons (the park by the library), worry no more. It was mowed as part of required prairie maintenance and, we assume, will grow back strong and healthy, the way it's supposed to. (Public opinion is divided on the probability of this so... stay tuned!)

Pie-baking contest at Brink!
So you think you can bake? Prove it to your neighbors, and win coveted beer-related prizes, at Brink Brewery’s pie-baking contest August 28.
Applications for the 60 contest slots are being taken now, and no entry free is required. Pies must be entirely home-made, including the crust, and should be baked in 9-inch pans (disposable preferred). Applicants must submit at least two pies, one for the professional judges and one for the people’s choice award. Each applicant gets only one shot, so pick your best pie: Fruit (30 entries), Sweet (15 entries) and Savory (15 entries).
Celebrity judges include Guillermo Vidal, co-founder of Mash Roots; and bread-baker (and actor, and opera singer) extraordinaire Will Reed of Giminetti Baking Company’s Bread Bar. Awards will be presented at about 4 pm in the taproom.

Books for Pleasant Hill Academy
As Told by Foundation, a non-profit organization created to help underserved youth discover the power of reading, has selected Pleasant Hill Academy for its first-ever Back to School book drive. Modeled on two previous summer book campaigns, the drive will be the beginning of a semester-long partnership with the school, and will serve as a pilot program for future partnership.
The drive’s goal is to raise enough money to provide a positive, fun book featuring black characters to each student in the school’s fourth and fifth grades. You can contribute money to the $2,000 target, or choose one or more books from the organization’s website and make the purchase directly. The deadline is Sept. 1.

Denise Krueger to lead Mercy McAuley
Due to an unexepcted move, Jennifer Fellinger, announced as the new Mercy McAuley High School President earlier this summer, is unable to take the position. Dr. Denise Krueger has been appointed in her place and began her position immediately.
Dr. Krueger is a 1980 alumna of the school and has been Chair of its Board of Directors since 2018. A professor of mathematics at Mount St. Joseph University for the past 16 years, she also chaired the university’s Mathematics and Computing departments. A recipient of the Excellence in Education Award from Ohio Magazine, the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities Award for Outstanding Teacher, and the Mount St. Joseph Excellence in Teaching and Emerging Scholar Awards, Dr. Krueger has three grown children and lives in Harrison.
“Mercy education is my heart, my soul, and my passion,” she says. “I am truly blessed to have the honor of serving this incredible school community as President. I am excited to walk alongside our employees, students, parents, alumnae, benefactors and friends in taking Mercy McAuley High School to even greater heights”

Community Conversations Videos |

This week, the College Hill Community Urban Corp. (see below for meeting information) began a 9-week live video series, “Community Conversations.” Every Tuesday at 7 pm, a new short video interview with local experts about how CHCURC works for the community will air on the CHCURC Facebook page, followed by a live conversation between a staff member and board member. Can’t watch live? Watch the videos later on Facebook or on the group’s website.
Fans of last year’s “Seth and Jake Happy Hour” Facebook live videos will be glad to know that the tradition continues.

Water Payments Past Due? Read On!
Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) is now working with Promise Network Inc. (PromisePay) for payment plan processing. There are no fees to set up payment plans for past-due utility charges in a variety of payment methods including Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ACH, as well as credit or debit card.
Click the link below to enroll by mobile phone or computer at the link below. Property owners and tenants can use the PromisePay to set up plans and payments, arrange for text reminders, and more. According to the utility, customers with active payment plans will be removed from the delinquency process.

Aiken Football Featured in Paper
The Cincinnati Enquirer featured Aiken’s football program in a July 20 story bout Honest Game, an organization that helps high schools and athletes keep track of grades and classes for NCAA college eligibility.
Coach Harry McCall said the program has been a tremendous help to his players: "I think it's huge. It gives (athletes) a little bit more hope and a little bit more understanding of how this process works. A lot of kids didn't understand what it takes academically to get to some of these goals they had in mind and it breaks them down so tremen-dously." Click here to read more.

Contemporary Dance Theater tp Merge with MamLuft Next Month |
|
In September the Contemporary Dance Theater, long headquartered at historic College Hill Town Hall, will merge with MamLuft&Co. Dance. The new company, Mutual Dance Theatre and Arts Centres, will have two campuses and will continue to teach, perform, and present contemporary dance.
Jefferson James is stepping down from directing Contemporary Dance Theater, but will remain involved with the new organization. Jeanne Mam-Luft, who will lead it, says: “Contemporary Dance Theater — and, really, that means Jefferson — has been absolutely integral to MamLuft&Co. Dance. I’ve never met another person who has single-handedly held up a genre of art for an entire city for as long as Jefferson has. When people call her the ‘mother of Modern Dance in Cincinnati’ (and I know she hates the term), they do it with good reason. My organization — actually, the city — owes so much to her, and it’s an immense honor to be trusted with continuing her work. We both have a deep, deep love for Modern Dance and for Cincinnati, and I know that there is no other work that either of us want to be doing.”
CDT held its annual Area Choreographers Festival this week at the Aronoff Center downtown, followed by master classes with choreographers at Town Hall. The two campuses, College Hill (The Hill) and Hartwell (The Hart) will both continue to offer a wide range of dance classes for adults, children, and teens, and will sponsor classes and performances at other locations as well. Rec Center News
The College Hill Rec Center is a city facility offering youth and adult activities and sports, classes, two gyms, a 1/10-mile indoor walking track, and summer programming. Membership is $2/year for children, $10/year for ages 18-24 and seniors; $25/year for adults 25-54 (additional fees for classes and gym). Our Rec Center is one of the most-used in the city!

Pumpkin Patch is returning--a bit whittled down and scaled back and in a new location!
"The Patch at Patrick's Park" will take place 11 AM-3 PM on Sat., Oct. 9, at Patrick Wolterman Memorial Park on The Avenue. With musical performances to enjoy, fall garden flowers and decor (think Egbert's pumpkins, gourds, mums, Indian corn) to buy while picking up take-home, kid-oriented handicrafts to make with family, and popping into one of the restaurants for a bite to eat (or bring a sack lunch), the day will be reminiscent of the real deal, Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival, which we hope will return in 2022.
There's even a Makers Market behind Brink during The Patch for shopping high quality goods from local artisans. And, who doesn't like a beer 'bout noon time?
Parking is plentiful on street and behind The Hollywood Theatre building.

Compost Drop-Off Program at Fern
Queen City Commons, a new Cincinnati composting and compost collection organization, has opened a household food scrap drop-off center at Fern on Hamilton Avenue. For a small monthly fee ($5-$15, based on ability to pay) you get access to a composting bin in the parking lot. The combined waste is collected every week and delivered to farms and gardens in Cincinnati, which compost them.
“Your food scraps are gathered into one big pile, where, with the help of many hungry microorganisms, they break down in a matter of weeks into plant-accessible nutrients,” say the organizers. “Contrast this to a landfill, where organic material takes years to break down through a process that releases methane, a gas much stronger and more destructive than carbon to our atmosphere. By choosing to compost your food scraps, you are ensuring a healthier alternative, turning what would have otherwise gone to the landfill into a soil amendment that supports food grown right here in town.”

The College Hill Urban Redevelopment Corporation revitalizes and helps the business district in order to strengthen the entire neighborhood. It has a paid staff and a volunteer board, which meets monthly; join to help guide future development in our neighborhood and other projects. Public meetings yet to resume; yearly dues are $20.

The College Hill Forum is our Community Council; join or attend to find out what’s happening in College Hill, especially long-term projects and overall civic concerns. The Forum meets every fourth Tuesday at 7 pm, except in August and December; currently, meetings are BY ZOOM ONLY but remain open to all residents.
