enhancing your new year
with a simple reminder.....
|
|
Consider tuning into your senses in this new year
It can have a profound impact in your 2020.
|
|
Our senses;
They enhance our communication and relationships with everything and everyone around us.
These biological attributes are fundamental in our ability to protect ourselves and engage in our world. We can easily forget their impact or simply take them for granted, unless of course we don’t have them.

Sight,
your vision, what you see, what you observe, what’s in front of you and happening around you. Think about when you’re talking with someone, do you look at them, really take in their face? Does their expression match what they’re saying? What you’re seeing can tell the story. Try to pay more attention to what you see, it’s impact and how you react.
consider
:
- When walking down the street do you take in what you’re seeing? What makes you smile? What makes you sad?
- When someone who looks angry or sad do you ask them if they’re ok?
- If a baby is crying do you respond?
- If a pet is whimpering do you try to help?
- If you encounter water on the floor, do you wipe it up?
Sound,
your ability to hear, to listen. Sound is all around us. It can tell us so much, if we tune into it. It can trigger an emotion and let us know what’s around the corner (good or bad). In 1697 it was first said “music calms the savage beast”, (William Congreve) . Understanding how you listen is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. Try to clear your thoughts and listen to without interruption or a preconceived notion of what is being said, having to be heard first or judgment…. you may be surprised.
consider
:
- When in a conversation, does the tone of someone’s voice match what they’re saying or does it give a different message?
- How often are you are in a conversation with someone while caught up in your own thoughts and not hearing what they’re saying? When you catch yourself, try asking yourself if you really want to miss out.
- Would you consider taking off your headphones and earplugs and just listening to the world around you. What do you think you would hear?
Smell,
can awaken our senses evoking emotion and memories. Our sense of smell can evoke knowledge of what’s to come, a delicious treat, something that has gone wrong (fire, food that’s turned bad). Have you ever picked up on what you are experiencing by the fragrance, scents or smells that surround you. Our sense of smell might be more powerful than we think.
consider:
- You decide to purchase a new fragrance….does it take more than a minute? What is it you are looking for the sent to elicit? Does a certain perfume or colon trigger a memory?
- You’re walking into a holiday celebration you’ve been attending since childhood (if you were fortunate enough to have one) and take in an aroma. Does it elicit a feeling?
- As you approach the street where you live the smell of something burning is prevalent.
- Is an emotion triggered when you experience a scent you are not expecting when you enter a room, elevator or bakery?
Taste
,
key in nourishing ourselves. Mmmmmm it’s so good or oh no! We all have a favorite memory associated with eating. Can you recall yours’? Do you enjoy if and when you cook for someone or feed someone? Consider the impact for yourself and recipient. How does taste impact your life? Our sense of taste impacts much in our socialization and survival.
consider:
- Take one raisin or m&m or anything simple and small. Place it in your mouth and really taste it.
- Contemplate the first time you tried something or fed a child or pet. Can you recall their expression or reaction?
- If our health requires a “special diet” consider the emotion(s) elicited?
Touch,
a hug, punch, pat on the back, making love. Sometimes a touch on the arm is more impactful than any words. It’s been proven that a hug can change body chemistry. Petting a dog or a cat soothes and relaxes. Touch impacts the person touching and the person being touched. The power of touch!
consider
:
- When a person in your life is sad do you put your arms around them, hold their hand, provide a pat on the back.
- Your reaction to touching a hot stove.
- Other everyday occurrences, the ice is cold, the sheets are soft, your clothes are rough. The feel of a dog, bird or porcupine.
- Imagine if nothing felt as you thought it would. Think of the texture, temperature and reaction.
My wish for you,
acknowledge your senses and take advantage of them.
