Greetings Terriers,
Last week we highlighted the start of Arab American Heritage Month. This week, we are excited to spotlight Dalit History Month, which also takes place during April!
Dalit is a term that means "broken" or "untouchable". It has been adopted by a group of people who have faced oppression by the caste system in India. The caste system is the social hierarchy in India that has existed for over 2,000 years. It divides the population into different groups, or castes, which determine how people in those groups must live and the jobs they can have. Dalits were historically at the bottom of the caste system.
They have adopted the term Dalit to symbolize change and the end of caste-based oppression. Dalit History Month is dedicated to celebrating the culture and achievements of Dalit people and raising awareness about the issues they face.
Dalit History Month aims to amplify voices within the Dalit community and preserve their stories. It celebrates the immense strength and resilience of this community. It is an important time to reflect on the ongoing struggles that Dalit people continue to face today, and the ways that we as a community can make a difference.
Dalit History Month was first celebrated in 2014 in the United States, and was inspired by Black History Month. Celebrations have spread to India where the Dalit movement originated, and it is also celebrated in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia which have large Dalit communities.

In a cluttered news landscape dominated by men, emerges India's only newspaper run by Dalit women. Chief Reporter Meera and her journalists break traditions, redefining what it means to be powerful. All from the untouchables caste, the women of Khabar Lahariya prepare to transition the newspaper from print to digital while fighting for marginalized voices in the worlds largest democracy. Writing With Fire chronicles the astonishing determination of these reporters as they redefine what it means to be powerful.

Coming Out as Dalit by Jashica Dutt
Born into a “formerly untouchable manual-scavenging family in small-town India,” Yashica Dutt was taught from a young age to not appear “Dalit looking.” Although prejudice against Dalits, who compose 25% of the population, has been illegal since 1950, caste-ism in India is alive and well. Blending her personal history with extensive research and reporting, Dutt provides an incriminating analysis of caste’s influence in India over everything from entertainment to judicial systems and how this discrimination has carried over to US institutions.

The Trauma of Caste by Thenmozhi Soundararajan
Dalit American activist Thenmozhi Soundararajan puts forth a call to awaken and act, not just for readers in South Asia, but all around the world. She ties Dalit oppression to fights for liberation among Black, Indigenous, Latinx, femme, and Queer communities, examining caste from a feminist, abolitionist, and Dalit Buddhist perspective--and laying bare the grief, trauma, rage, and stolen futures enacted by Brahminical social structures on the caste-oppressed.

Living Language: A Poetry Celebration of Voice with Amanda Shea - Museum of African American History
In honor of National Poetry Month, Living Language is an evening of poetry, reflection, and community celebrating the liberating power of language. Special guest poet Amanda Shea will join the lineup, bringing her dynamic storytelling and perspective to the stage.
The evening also includes a limited community open mic for local poets and an interactive mini-workshop, Poetry as Preservation, where participants will write a five-line poem inspired by a museum artifact or exhibit piece. The program closes with a collective reading of audience-created poems and an invitation to continue building community through future MAAH events.

The National Center for Jewish Film’s Annual Film Festival - MFA
Since 1976, the National Center for Jewish Film has rescued, restored, and exhibited films that document the diversity of Jewish life. The Center has one of the world’s largest archive collections of rare and endangered films with Jewish content, and every year it hosts a vibrant festival of new independent films and restored classics from around the world, with filmmakers, authors, and scholars.
This year’s festival takes place at the MFA and the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Curated by NCJF co-directors Lisa Rivo and Sharon Pucker Rivo.

Community Outreach & Programming Summer Intern - Boston Athletic Association
Reporting to the Director of Community Engagement, the Community Intern (Outreach & Programming) will provide a variety of support from outreach to event operations, program design, and more. They will help host summer events, such as the Boston Running Collaborative (BRC) Youth Track Meets, and Boston Moves events, and assist the Community Team with designing new initiatives, such as curriculum and frameworks to be used by schools. The Intern will have an opportunity to engage, welcome and positively impact youth and families in this role.
