Greetings Terriers!
With the start of April, we are celebrating the start of Arab American Heritage Month! Every April is dedicated to recognizing the culture of Arab American people, celebrating their achievements, and remembering their many contributions to society. Today, more than 3.5 million Americans have Arab heritage.
Arab American Heritage Month was first celebrated in 2017. Grassroots organizations and volunteers across the country worked to honor this month and gain official recognition. During the first year, a few states recognized the initiative, but it has continued to grow in recent years.
In 2022, Congress, the U.S. Department of State, and 45 state governors issued proclamations commemorating the initiative. Increasing numbers of states have recognized the month every year, and in 2023 the president issued a proclamation officially recognizing Arab American Heritage Month.
Arab American Heritage Month is now permanently recognized in Illinois, Oregon, Virginia, Indiana, and California. It is expected that more states will start to celebrate this month permanently.
The theme for this year is "Many voices, one community." This year's theme is dedicated to honoring the diversity in the Arab American community, and the shared values that unite them. The Arab American community has heritage from more than 22 countries, and collectively represent a wide variety of languages, religions, and experiences. The theme highlights that these differences in the community are one of its greatest strengths.

Nujoud Merancy was the Chief of the Exploration Mission Planning Office at NASA, where she managed the Artemis missions that are flying astronauts to the moon (Fun fact: they launched last wednesday!). Merancy is currently an associate administrator of the strategy and architecture office at NASA, and she has worked with spacecrafts since 2001.
In 2019, a headshot of Merancy wearing a Palestinian tatreez-inspired blazer gained a lot of attention online. In anticipation of the Artemis mission sending the first woman to the moon, Merancy gained online attention by starting the hashtag "#Yallatothemoon" to celebrate.
Merancy still has family in Palestine. Her dad's side is from Nazareth, and she purchased the tatreez on a visit, and had it custom tailored onto her blazer. She has served as a key role model for Arab Americans in science and leadership.

Helen Thomas was an American journalist known for her coverage of the US presidents, and her role in breaking down barriers for women reporters. She was born in Kentucky, and her parents were Lebanese immigrants.
She worked to open the National Press Club to women, and soon after became the first women officer. Thomas also served as White House correspondent for United Press International, covering every U.S. president from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama, for a total of 57 years. She worked at a time where women faced many challenges in the field of journalism, and she worked to break down the barriers.
She wrote two books of memoirs, Dateline: White House (1975) and Front Row at the White House: My Life and Times (1999). She has been widely celebrated for her work and influence. Thomas received nine honorary degrees and many journalism awards including the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Award and membership in the Gridiron Club, a formerly all-male journalism fraternity.

George Spiro Dibie was an accomplished cinamatographer who won five emmy awards. His award-winning programs were Mr. Belvedere (1985), Growing Pains (1987 and 1991), Just the Ten of Us (1990) and Sister, Sister (1995). Dibie was born in Palestine, before moving to the US for school and to start his film career.
In addition to his success in producing films, Dibie served as the president for the International Cinematographers Guild, Local 600. During this time he initiated diversity programs to assist women and other under-represented people in the film industry. He wanted to help them succeed, and supported training programs to develop their skills.
He was also an active member of the Directors Guild of America, the Technology Council of the Motion Picture Television Industries, and several other organizations. Dibie was actively involved in the community and served as a role model for those in the film industry.

All painting materials will be provided, so simply show up and enjoy painting at your own pace. Whether you are looking for a quiet moment to relax, a creative outlet, or a chance to connect with others, this session offers a welcoming space to slow down and recharge.
Participation Fee: $10
100% of the proceeds will be donated to Women’s Lunch Place.
Women’s Lunch Place is a Boston nonprofit that provides daytime shelter, nutritious meals, healthcare access, and supportive services for women experiencing homelessness and poverty.

Shred + Recycle Event - BU Sustainability, BU Information Security
Bring your sensitive documents and hard drives for shredding, along with any electronics and recyclables. Have questions about recycling or keeping your BU account secure? Our Sustainability and Information Security teams will be on hand to help!
These events are open to all faculty, staff, and students to safely & securely dispose of documents – any and all paperwork, especially those papers with personal or sensitive information – and hard drives. You can also recycle batteries, lightbulbs, toner, cords, and electronics. Additional recycling opportunities for recycling textiles, books, and film plastics.

Marketing and Public Relations Intern - BU Sustainability
The Marketing & Public Relations Intern will support BU Sustainability's communications team in developing dynamic written and visual materials that empower the BU community to take action and informs the community about the university's Climate Action and Zero Waste planning goals. This position requires a creative communicator who is passionate about sustainability and values the importance of using digital platforms for communication, storytelling, and learning.
The ideal candidate will be a superb writer and nimble team player with experience in multimedia content generation, website management, tracking media trends, and strategic communications. Along with the position's core responsibilities, this candidate will support additional communications management tasks such as social media and graphic design and other projects within BU Sustainability, including but not limited to community engagement, data analysis, and report creation. The internship has the potential to extend into subsequent semesters, and preference is given to long-term candidates.

Community Energy & Environmental Justice Fellow - Massachusetts Clean Energy Center
The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) is seeking a Community Energy & Environmental Justice Intern for an approximately 6-month position, for the Summer 2026 (July 2026) and through the remainder of the calendar year through December 2026, to support the implementation and evaluation of MassCEC's community clean energy adoption initiatives, including our EmPower Massachusetts program, which is an initiative focused on increasing clean energy access for previously underserved or vulnerable populations and empowering community-based innovation for solutions.
As a part of these programs, MassCEC will offer grants for the exploration and implementation of promising innovative solutions. This position will also support our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), and Environmental Justice (EJ) efforts more broadly, potentially including efforts to build a more diverse clean energy workforce.

Operations Intern - The GreaterBoston Food Bank
The intern will work on a new transportation plan reporting to the logistics team, as well as working with the Agency Relations and the Food Acquisition teams. The goal is to examine the current system and provide solutions to create efficiency, with the potential to reduce miles driven, improve idle time, and create a process for donation pickups.
Role & Responsibilities
Research transportation efficiencies in transportation plans, including routes, open slots, and potential automation opportunities.
Track and analyze errors in inventory, identifying sources of discrepancies.
Review spreadsheets and other data provided by the Warehouse Logistics Specialist.
Produce a final report summarizing findings and recommendations at the end of the internship.
Support other warehouse-related research projects as needed.
