Welcome back everyone! This week we are highlighting the start of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. This year Ramadan begins on the evening of February 17th, and will finish at sundown on March 19th. The start of the month is based on the sighting of the crescent moon, so it can vary across different places in the world. The month usually lasts 29 to 30 days.
This month is sacred because during this time in the 7th century, the Prophet Muhammad received revelations from Allah, or God. These were later written down, and became the Quran, or Koran (the holy book of Islam). The Prophet Muhammed was believed to have been chosen by Allah as a messenger to teach humankind. To commemorate receiving these teachings, Muslims around the world participate in various traditions.

During Ramadan many Muslims fast if they are able to. This means they abstain from eating or drinking between dawn and sunset. It is a time of self-restraint and self-reflection. This practice is done for Muslims to focus on their spiritual growth and their connection with Allah. It can also be done to seek forgiveness for past sins, to instill gratitude, and to empathize with those less fortunate. People who are pregnant, sick, or elderly do not fast if it would put them at risk.
Many Muslims go to mosques and spend additional time praying. Some recite a special prayer called the Tarawih prayer (night prayer). This is also a time of increased charity, with many people donating food.
Suhoor is the meal eaten in the morning before the sun rises and the fast begins. After sunset each day, the fast is broken with Iftar. Dates, water, and fruits are common to break the fast, followed by a larger meal eaten together with family and friends. This also marks a time of storytelling, games, and other activities.
The day after Ramadan ends is the start of the 10th month (Shawwal). The end of Ramadan is celebrated with Eid al-Fitr, a three day festival. It is also known as the "Festival of Breaking the Fast" or "Lesser Eid." This year, it will begin on the evening of March 19th. This is a time for Muslims to celebrate their accomplishments after a month of fasting. People take part in special morning prayers, gather with friends and family, and prepare to eat special meals. This is also a time when many Muslims give to charity so that everyone can enjoy this festival.
| | Happy Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week! | | |
February 15th to 21st is Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week! This week is dedicating to raising awareness about the aromantic spectrum and to celebrate the aromantic community.
Aromanticism is a spectrum encompassing a wide range of identities. It's a romantic orientation in which peoples experience little to no romantic attraction. They might not relate to the traditional ideas of having a romantic "crush" or "falling in love." This varies a lot between different people. Some may still pursue relationships and get married, or pursue other types of intimate relationships. Others choose not to have relationships at all.
This week was first celebrated in November of 2014 as Aromantic Awareness Week. In 2015 the week was moved to February, and the name was changed to Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week to include the range of identities.
