Happy Black History Month!

Greetings Terriers!

Welcome to the beginning of February, which also marks the start of Black History Month! This month celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of people of African descent.

Black History Month was created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in February, 1926. Originally, it was a week of celebration called "Negro History Week". He wanted to change how people understood US history by highlighting the role that Black people played.

He chose February because it contained the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, two important figures in Black History. The Black community had already been honoring Lincoln's and Douglass' birthdays. Putting Negro History Week at this time made sense because it was already being celebrated by the Black community.

This year marks the 100th celebration of Black History Month! This year the theme is "A Century of Black History Commemorations." This theme is meant to reflect on the impact that these celebrations have had on Black people today and throughout history. Commemorations have played a role in shaping identities, advancing equality, and preserving histories that may have otherwise been lost.

Ways to Celebrate

At BU, the Howard Gotlieb Archival Resource Center gives you access to many great historical archives. These include archives on key Black figures, such as their resources on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or Howard Thurman. They have a special collection on civil rights and social justice topics. All of these are free to access through BU, so we highly recommend you check them out!

Learn more about Black History by visiting a museum or looking at their digital resources. The National Museum of African American History and Culture has many great online resources. Boston also has a Museum of African American History that is accessible by the Green Line.

Support local Black-owned businesses in Boston! On February 6th and 7th there will be a Black-owned business marketplace pop-up in Cambridge.

Read books written by Black authors to learn more and support them. Author Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum is having an online talk with the BPL on February 5th. Register here! At the Shaw-Roxbury Branch, they are hosting a conversation with Ilyasah Shabazz, a professor, author, and the daughter of Malcolm X. Learn more here about this event, which will be on February 9th.

Watch films and documentaries by black filmmakers. The Boston Public Library is hosting a screening of Reparations Untold on February 3rd. Learn more here! On February 20th, the Parker Hill Branch of the BPL will be having a screening of Judas and the Black Messiah.
