Welcome back everyone, and happy Lunar New Year!
February 17th is the start of Lunar New Year, which is also known as the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year. It is a 15 day celebration which marks the first new moon on the lunisolar calendar. This tradition dates back to over 3000 years ago in China, and today is considered to be the most important holiday in the country.
While the Gregorian calendar follows the sun's position, the lunisolar calendar combines the moon phases with the sun's position to determine years. Chinese, Hindu, and Hebrew calendars all use this system. The start of Lunar New Year falls sometime between January 21th and February 20th every year, depending on the moon cycles. While China adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1912 and today uses it officially for many purposes, they continue to use the lunisolar calendar for cultural festivals.
Lunar New Year is an occasion full of spending time with family, enjoying feasts, watching fireworks, and attending parties. It is celebrated in many different countries around the world, learn more about these unique traditions below!

In South Korea, the holiday is called Seollal. Family is a very important part of this celebration, and many families gather at the house of the oldest male relative to spend time together.
Families typically prepare a large meal as part of tradition called "charye." The final part of the ceremony is called "eumbok," where the family eats the food together and gains the blessings of their ancestors for the coming year. The food at these meals varies across different regions, but some common foods include seafood, rice, and ddeokguk (rice cake soup). Additionally, people often play games like GoStop and Yut Nori.

In Indonesia, families traditionally celebrate by going to their local temple. These temples are usually decorated with red lanterns and red candles. They also celebrate with lion dances, music, and other performances.
Food is a central part of this celebration, representing prosperity and happiness. Some common foods include "Yu Sheng" (a raw fish salad symbolizing abundance), "Nian Gao" (a sticky rice cake representing progress), and "Jiaozi" (dumplings symbolizing wealth).

Passport to Asia - Asia Business Club
Join the Questrom community for our Annual Asian Cultural Fair, celebrating the richness and diversity of Asian cultures! As we begin the Year of the Horse, we look forward to bringing our diverse community together to honor the many traditions and celebrations across Asia.
This event is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity of our student body and network with peers in a festive atmosphere. Light refreshments featuring traditional cultural dishes will be served.

Chinese New Year Flower Popup Market - China Trade Center for Chinatown
Stop by the China Trade Center for Chinatown Main Street's Annual Flower Market. Shop for fresh flowers to usher in the Year of the Horse, along with new decorations, red envelopes, items, and gifts!
The pop-up store is located directly inside the China Trade Center, across the street from the Chinatown Orange Line MBTA stop.

Jewish Cultural Endowment: Call for Proposals
Jewish Cultural Endowment (JCE) at Boston University, we are pleased to announce a March 2 deadline for our 2026 grant application cycle. The JCE supports Jewish cultural programs across the University, sponsoring lectures, conferences, literary events, curricular enhancement, and artistic performances and exhibitions. Our mission is to foster an appreciation of Jewish culture in all its richness and diversity.
We invite grant proposals from individuals (faculty, students, and staff) with access to a BU program administration that will be responsible for planning, promoting and executing the event. JCE funded events must take place on the BU campus or virtually and should directly benefit the BU community. For more information please see

Events & Partnerships Intern - Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy
The Greenway Conservancy, the non-profit responsible for the management and care of The Greenway, is seeking highly motivated and reliable individuals to join our team as one of three Events & Partnerships Interns in late spring/summer 2026. The primary role of the Events & Partnerships Intern is to assist the Programs Department in its daily operations.
Millions of people visit The Greenway each year for community events, local markets, unique food truck meals, and engaging art. The Programs Department works very closely with all Conservancy team members and departments to assure an outstanding visitor experience.

Summer 2026 Intern - Consortium on Gender, Security, and Human Rights
The Consortium on Gender, Security and Human Rights is an organization devoted to bringing feminist analysis to the quest to end armed conflicts and build peace that is sustainable for both people and planet. Founded in 2002, and now based at the University of Massachusetts Boston, its work is a result of collaboration between scholars and researchers, as well as NGOs and international institutions such as the United Nations.
Intern responsibilities vary and are determined individually for each intern. Our staff meets with each incoming intern to come up with a mix of assignments that best matches the intern's learning goals and skills with the Consortium's current needs. This internship provides interns with the opportunity to see how a small NGO functions on a day-to-day basis as well as develop their own leadership skills as an essential part of this organization.
