| | Happy Irish American Heritage Month! | | |
Greetings terriers, and welcome back! We hope you all had a great spring break, and were able to take a much needed rest. We're excited to start off the second half of the semester by highlighting Irish American Heritage Month!
Irish American Heritage Month is celebrated every March to honor the history and contributions of the Irish community in the US. It was first celebrated in March of 1991 with a law passed by congress. Ever since, the president has issued a proclamation every year declaring the month as Irish American Heritage Month.
The history of Irish people in the US goes far back. Over 6 million Irish people have immigrated to the United States since 1820, and today about 10% of Americans have Irish heritage.
| | History of Saint Patrick's Day | | |
Saint Patrick's Day is March 17th! This holiday celebrates Saint Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland during the 5th century. It had been celebrated in Ireland for over 1,000 years, and was originally a Roman Catholic feast day. Many Irish families traditionally celebrated by going to church in the morning, and having a feast in the evening. One common traditional meal was bacon and cabbage. They would also danse, drink, and play games together.
The first Saint Patrick's Day parade took place in 1601, in a Spanish colony that is now Florida. The first Saint Patrick's Day parade in the US happened in 1762 in New York City, when Irish soldiers serving the English military marched through the city to celebrate the holiday.
Following the Great Potato Famine in Ireland in 1845, more Irish people began immigrating to the US. Celebrations for Saint Patrick's day have become more popular and widespread throughout the US as the Irish American community has grown.
Today, Saint Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in the US, and parades happen in many major cities across the country. In Boston this year, the parade will be held today, March 15th.

| | Eid Mubarak! The End of Ramadan | | |
On the evening of March 19th, Ramadan will come to an end. This marks the end of a month-long period of fasting for many in the Muslim community, which began on February 17th.
The end of Ramadan marks the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, or the "festival of breaking the fast." It is the first day after the end of Ramadan, but celebrations typically last for up to three days. This is a time to celebrate successfully completing the fast and fulfilling their duty to Allah to abstain. It is also a time to rest and recover after the month.
Community is a large part of this celebration, and many people spend time with friends and family, give gifts, and enjoy meals together. Eid al-Fitr is dedicated to appreciating the blessings that Allah has given, and many people participate in special prayers. It is also for remembering those who are less fortunate, and giving to charity is a common practice. During this time, a common greeting is “Eid Mubarak,” meaning “Have a blessed Eid.”

Art & Nature Center (Intern) - Peabody Essex Museum
The Art & Nature Center (ANC) showcases original exhibitions that investigate our interconnections with nature through contemporary art, memorable objects, and interactive experiences. Designed for visitors of all ages, the family-friendly center features changing exhibitions, hands-on displays, and art-making spaces.
The ANC is looking for an intern who will work with education staff in the implementation and facilitation of a variety of interactive programs. The ANC encompasses regular drop-in art making activities, exhibition facilitation and maintenance, and opportunities for independent projects. Independent projects can include supporting exhibition evaluation, generating public programming ideas, and exploring future ANC exhibition topics. ANC interns will also assist in a variety of administrative tasks. Ideal for students interested in museum education.

Frontline Marketing and Communications (Internship) - GBH News
Frontline has been American television’s top long-form news and current affairs series since 1983. Since its inception, the PBS documentary series has won every major journalism and broadcasting award, including 110 Emmy Awards, 34 Peabody Awards and an Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature.
Frontline is seeking an intern who is eager to learn about audience development, and contribute as a fully-recognized member of the team. We utilize data to make informed decisions about our strategy and tactics to grow new audiences and increase loyalty with existing audiences. We would work with you to craft at least one ongoing, semester-long project that contributes to Frontline's strategy in one or more of our key areas. Responsibilities would include some of the daily tasks that keep Frontline running, but we are also looking for someone who can actively contribute to our conversations and brainstorms about innovative ways to connect with new and existing audiences.
