Happy Gudi Padwa!

Greetings terriers!

Gudi Padwa marks the start of the new year for many Marathi and Konkani Hindu people. The holiday is primarily celebrated in the Maharashtra, Goa, and Konkan regions in India, but it is also celebrated in other places. Gudi Padwa takes place on the first day of the Chaitra month according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar, and it usually falls in March or April. This year, it took place on March 19th.

Some believe that Gudi Padwa is the day Lord Brahma created time and the universe, while others believe that this day commemorates the coronation of Rama in Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana.

The word "padwa" comes from the Sanskrit word "pratipada," meaning the first day of a lunar fortnight. The word "gudhi" means a flag, and many people hang flags outside of their homes for this holiday. These flags are often brightly colored, and decorated with neem leaves, flowers, and silver or copper. The flags are believed to ward off evil, and bring good luck.

Gudi Padwa represents the arrival of spring, new opportunities, and prosperity. People might buy gold, buy a new vehicle, or open a new business at the start of the new year. Many people start their day by eating bittersweet neem leaves, which are used purify the blood and strengthen the body. They might also start off with a holy bath, and visit the local temple for prayers.

People draw rangoli on the ground to welcome friends and family inside their home. It is common to decorate the home with flowers and torans to spread positivity. Gift-giving is another major part of this celebration, and the elders typically give gifts to the younger people in their families. In the streets, there is dancing and food festivals.

Not all Hindu people celebrate the new year during Gudi Padwa. For some, their new years celebrations coincide with Diwali or Vaisakhi.

Happy Ugadi!

Ugadi is celebrated in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. The name Ugadi comes from the Sanskrit words "yuga," meaning "era," and "adi," meaning "beginning." Like Gudi Padwa, it also celebrates the new year on the Hindu calendar, and the first day of the Chaitra month. It falls on the same day as Gudi Padwa, on March 19th.

Ugadi and Gudi Padwa have some similarities. Both are celebrated by bathing in the morning, drawing rangoli in front of the house, and eating neem leaves.

Ugadi is also celebrated in many unique ways. An important part of this celebration is going to the temple to attend the recitation of the panchanga sravanam (astrological almanac) for the coming year. The main dish eaten on this day is ugadi pachadi, a type of chutney. The mixture typically consists of tamarind, neem flowers, jaggery, salt, chili pepper, and raw mango. The combination of flavors symbolizes the variety of emotions one might experience in the coming year.

Rama Navami!

Rama Navami is the Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Rama. It is celebrated across India on the ninth day of the waxing moon in the month of Chaitra, and this year it will be on March 26th.

Rama Navami is dedicated to worshiping Lord Rama, a deity known for his virtue, reason, and moral conduct. On this day, people fast and recite the Ramayana (ancient Indian epic that narrates the life of Lord Rama). They gather in temples and homes to recite special prayers, and chant Rama's name. It is also common to give to charity because of the moral virtues that Lord Rama represents.

This day is a time when people seek the wisdom and protection of Lord Rama. Showing devotion on Rama Navami is believed to purify the soul and bring peace and prosperity.

Global Connections Centering Circle

The mid-semester stretch can be one of the most demanding times of the year. You beat the deadlines, decisions have been weighing on you, the noise of the semester becoming harder to tune out. Global Connections understands that thriving at Questrom isn’t just about academic achievement. It’s about showing up as your whole self, and sometimes, that means pausing long enough to reconnect with who that is.

That’s why we’re inviting you to join us for a special gathering: Centering Circle: A Mid-Semester Reset – a guided meditation experience designed to help you slow down, breathe deeply, and find your center amidst the busyness of school and life.

What to Expect

This event will be led by a trained spiritual guide and Buddhist practitioner who brings warmth, wisdom, and a genuinely welcoming presence to this kind of work. You don’t need any prior meditation experience. You don’t need to identify with any particular faith or spiritual tradition. All you need to bring is yourself and a willingness to be present.

The session will include guided breathing, mindfulness practices, and a grounding meditation tailored to the unique pressures of student life.

And because community and nourishment go hand in hand, we’ll close the evening with a shared dinner from 5 to 6 PM — a relaxed, communal space to connect with fellow students after the session.

Space is limited, register here to attend
