What We Learned About Our Youth at the May Forum

In May, nbCC’s coordinators Tim Shiebler and Lindzie White presented the most recent 2023 Prevention Needs Assessment (PNA) data. The presentation was held at the community forum at Terra Nova Church (85 Main st in North Adams). The presentation aimed to inform the community of how youth substance misuse trends are measured, the factors that put youth at risk and how bonding protective factors in the community, family, school and on an individual/peer level, can positively impact the youth in our region. For those who could not attend the forum here is a brief synopsis, (there is no recording available).

The Berkshire Youth Development Project (BYDP), is a county wide partnership which consists of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition (nbCC), Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, Tritown Health, 18 Degrees, the Gladys Allen Brigham Center and the Railroad Street Youth Project. BYDP coordinates with schools to administer the Prevention Needs Assessment (PNA) survey to 13-18 year olds who are enrolled in 8th, 10th, and 12th grade across Berkshire county every two years. The survey is designed to measure 19 risk-factors and 10 protective-factors, 6 problem-behaviors and 8 antisocial behaviors on an individual/peer, school, family and community level. nbCC has tracked risk and protective factors in northern Berkshire County since 2006. Risk factors include the characteristics of school, community, family and of students and their peer groups, known to predict increased likelihood of drug use, delinquency rates, school dropouts and violent behaviors among youth. Protective factors exert a positive influence and buffer against the negative influence of risk factors, therefore reducing the likelihood that adolescents will engage in problem behaviors. To give more context, here are some answers regarding two of the highlighted questions that were asked by engaged community members during the discussion:

How are the questions asked about depression rates and why are our youth so different?

Rising depression among youth is a national concern. When speaking about northern Berkshire county youth we are seeing 59% of them reporting depression symptoms, which is 18.2 points above the national norm. The PNA scales depression by asking students to indicate a yes or no answer on language like, “sometimes I think that life is not worth it, at times I think I am no good at all, all in all I am inclined to think that I am a failure” and “in the past year, have you felt depressed or sad MOST days, even if you felt OK sometimes?”

Depression in northern Berkshire County has been trending upward for the last two decades. Some youth are disproportionately affected; rural, justice involved, and LGBTQ youth. Qualitatively we know that these youth have enhanced risk factors and low protective factors. An example of this for rural youth is the diminished protective factor of “opportunities for pro social involvement”. In communities with less than 1700 residents, youth can face real or perceived barriers to accessing transportation, comprehensive health services, positive youth development programs, as well as low to no cost learning and social opportunities. These real or perceived barriers present with low engagement rates of youth from these communities and an enhanced risk of depression and substance use.

How does northern Berkshire county compare to the rest of Berkshire county?

The percentage of youth who use alcohol, tobacco (nicotine) and other drugs in northern Berkshire County during their lifetimes has been trending downward over the last decade. However, in the most current data, the percentage of students reporting they used alcohol, cigarettes, and e-cigarettes during the past 30 days, regionally and county-wide, is above the national norm. What does that mean? Well, it means that of the students who reported first time use, they not only used the substance but did so in excess. It is noteworthy that Massachusetts youth under 21, rank 6th in the country for the prevalence of drinking and binge-drinking in the past 30 days. So this isn’t just a Berkshire County issue, it’s a state issue as well.

To answer this question further, Table 1 (below) gives a deeper comparison of the total percentages of risk and protective factors as reported in PNA results from northern Berkshire County, Berkshire County, and compared to the national norms. The risk and protective factors outlined below were chosen from the much longer list within the PNA due to the intersection with the identified subpopulations previously mentioned.
