power on ...

Never let your printer know you're in a hurry - it can smell fear and urgency. (Who's been there - raise your hand?)

It took me an hour and a half the other night to attempt to smooth out a printer glitch that kept jumping to 'offline' each time I hit 'print.' I tried everything I could think of, I Googled the problem, I reset the router, I ensured my printer was set to default. I tried again and again and again yet could not get the printer and the laptop to sync. I guess they were having a spat that night.

Unsuccessful, I banged shut the printer lid, powered it off, shut down my laptop, and wished everyone well by morning - go have a restful sleep and fix yourselves already! Instead of frustrating myself further and trying the same solution repeatedly, I got lost on Netflix. Ahhhhh. Printer woes begone.

The next morning, I rebooted both devices and ... wa-la! My crazy printer finally decided to get along with my iMac and it spit out that shipping label I needed the night before.

Snippeteers, you've been there: with printers, phones, laptops, televisions, routers, iPads, and every other electronic device designed to drive us to drink when they want to act like spoiled brats.

They just KNOW. They sense our urgency and fear. They're messing with us.

Sometimes, we have to do this to ourselves while we feel unsuccessful, frustrated and not getting along with a circumstance, a situation, a person, an issue, a problem. The Universe is messing with us, smelling our fears - and we're just feeding it, powering it on by trying the incorrect solutions.

When some glitch in life is making us batty, we must not keep trying the same solution repeatedly and getting nowhere. We must step away, power off, shut it down for now, and switch it off our minds. We must go have a restful sleep and revisit the situation the next day, hopefully feeling less frustrated, less angry, with a fresher and clearer perspective to fix a problem.

It is only after that time-out that we might balance it and ourselves again. Power on!

a poem

Sandy Strong Resilience

by Suzanna Molino Singleton

She was battered by the wind,

She was tossed and turned by sea,

And yet three short months later,

She stands where she should be.

The beach is always where we left it,

One smart poet wrote by pen.

Here is proof she will not break,

From two hurricanes end to end.

She knows we need her calm,

She knows we need her sand.

She knows she must stay here for us,

To bask upon her land.

She's resilient, she's strong,

She bounces back for sure.

To once again lay under,

The yellow sun once more.

Hurricanes shall strike again,

Yet her strong spirit will fight back.

The beach is always where we left it,

One beauty of nature's pact.

This powerhouse of a new nonprofit organization was established last month by my young friend, Diana Liberto Grove. And when Diana gets an idea in her beautiful mind, look out! A foster mom of four, Diana saw a glitch in Maryland's foster care system - and she's primed to help it. She has big ideas, a big motive, and a really big passion. Please take a few minutes to sift through her nnew website and facebook page. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm Diana, a foster Mom of 4 in Harford County, Maryland. My husband Garth Grove and I primarily foster teenage girls. Teenagers are often overlooked in the system. Most people choose the cute babies! There are not enough foster homes currently, yet out of the active ones, very few accept teens.

I have been on a mission to support as many foster teens as possible - especially those who 'age out' of the system. Many of these teenagers end up in a group home which is more like a house than a home. They lack the feeling of purpose, belonging and love they deserve.
