Blessing of the Animals
This Sunday...

As many other churches around the world do in early October, Our Savior’s will offer a Blessing of the Animals, this Sunday, October 10. One very popular tradition for why churches bless animals stems from the life of St. Francis of Assisi. It is believed that circa 1215 St. Francis wandered outside the city of Assisi. Pondering decisions made regarding his life and whether they pleased God, St. Francis prayed. While praying St. Francis heard some birds singing. Looking up he spoke to them as if they were his equals. Soon thereafter he began preaching to them and to other animals as well. St. Francis went on to teach his followers that all creatures are his brothers and sisters. In time he became the patron saint of animals as well as the environment.

St. Francis died on October 4, 1226 at Portiuncula, Italy. Two years later, Pope Gregory IX pronounced St. Francis a saint. Since then churches have set aside a Sunday close to October 4 to bless animals. This Sunday, Pr. Sue will engage in such a blessing after service in the front courtyard. All members and friends of Our Savior’s are invited to bring their pet after worship to the gathering area in front of the church (no pets inside, please). If that’s not practical, bring a stuffed animal or a picture of your pet. We’ll take time to bless your animal, pray for the care of all of God’s creatures, and give thanks for the joy our pets add to our lives.
From the Council
For the next two Sundays we will continue to observe the protocols we have been following for worship service – every other row will remain roped off, within rows keep distance between family units, keep masks on indoors, and no congregational singing. We will hold fellowship time in the Fireside Room with coffee and cookies while still observing masking rules. The Book Discussion group will meet in the Conference Room. Council will meet on October 20th to discuss whether any changes will be made to these protocols. Thank you for your continued patience.

A Message From Pr. Sue Seiffert
From the Interim Pastor’s Desk -

Greetings! I’m your interim pastor. Let me introduce myself. I am an ordained minister of Word and Sacrament in the ELCA. And I am a trained intentional interim pastor. Before coming to Our Savior’s, I served sixteen interims in four different states. Several of those interims involved more than one congregation, so I have served thirty-two different congregations. You are interim number seventeen, congregation number thirty-three! I don’t even want to hazard a guess about how many different people I have served in those different congregations. Please be patient with me as I learn your names and don’t be surprised if I call you by someone else’s name.

One of the best ways for me to become acquainted with you is to drop in on small group gatherings, such as the Shepherd groups or Bible studies or whatever. I won’t always be able to stay for the entire session, but don’t be surprised when I show up! If you are part of a group that doesn’t meet at the church, please make sure that the church office has information about where and when you meet.

I am single with no children, unless you count my very spoiled cat. I have one brother who lives in Minnesota. I have two nephews; one lives in Wisconsin with his wife and five-year-old son, one lives in New York with his wife and five-year-old daughter. My father is 95 and lives in a residential care living facility in southeast Portland. My mother passed away in May, 2017.

Next week, I’ll write a few things about the transition process so that you can begin to understand what we will be doing in the next weeks and months. It is a pleasure to be your interim pastor. I am confident that God will bless our time together.

Sunday Book Discussion Group
The Book Group plans to meet about 15 minutes after church service on Sundays in the Conference Room, allowing a little time for coffee and socializing. We will be on chapter two of the book, "Grounded", by Diana Butler Bass. There are a few books available for anyone who needs one. As usual, newcomers always welcomed.
Tips from the Emergency Preparedness Team
October is Emotional Wellness Month. We have given you several suggestions on items to put in your "Go Kit" for your car. Here's one more consideration. Add some items that would help to relieve stress if you were caught in an emergency situation. Suggestions: Bible, books, paper and pencil, playing cards, Sudoku, knitting, coloring books, stuffed animals. Remember, you may be stuck for a while and perhaps unable to use your phone. What would be appropriate for your family?

Evangelism Club
This week we are celebrating the Blessing of the Animals. It's a perfect day to invite a friend with a pet to join us. If the pet is too large to transport, or they don't share the attitude of St Francis, bring a picture of it for its blessing. Maybe you would like to send blessings to your favorite animals at the zoo, bring something to represent them. Most children have stuffed animals and they are welcome too. Meet on the front lawn for the blessings after service, from 10:30-11:00 a.m.
