Langley’s football program has been building and on the rise in recent years, and this year the Varsity football team is excelling. In the first part of the season the team set an all-time school record of going undefeated to a 6-0 record. The team ended the regular season with just two losses, to Marshall and Washington-Liberty, ending the regular season with a 9-2 record and a spot in the playoffs.
This year the Saxons are making their third straight postseason appearance, and last Friday Langley won its first football playoff victory since 2013.
That first-round playoff victory, against the Marshall Statesmen, avenged one of Langley’s regular-season losses, earning for the Saxons an opportunity to do the same in the semifinals this Friday night against Washington-Liberty Generals.
As reported by FFXnow, last Friday third-seeded Langley downed the sixth-seed Marshall Statesmen (6-5), 42-14, after rallying from an early deficit in the 6D North Region high-school tournament. Marshall had defeated Langley, 28-21, during the regular season.
In the win over Marshall, the Saxons did not turn the ball over, had just one penalty, and amassed a balanced 355 total yards - 178 passing and 177 rushing. Marshall was hurt by three turnovers, posting a total gain of 308 total yards, 223 of them rushing.
In the semifinals tomorrow (Friday) night, Langley will visit and take on the No. 2 seed and undefeated Washington-Liberty Generals (11-0). In the regular season, Washington-Liberty topped host Langley, 28-14, to win the Liberty District title.
district honors: This week a number of Saxon football players were chosen for all-Liberty District honors for their regular season performances. Chosen as first-team all-Liberty offensive players were Langley running back Robert Roncskevitz and offensive linemen Josh Tyner. Honored as second-team all-Liberty District for offense were quarterback Cole Samburg, wide receiver Vincent Shen and tight end Aidan Daly.
First-team all-Liberty District honors on defense went to Robert Roncskevitz as linebacker and to Saxon defensive back Ellington Roane. Chosen for second-team all-Liberty District honors were lineman Owen Slamowitz, linebacker Cannon Clarke and defensive back Chandler Bowles.
Also receiving second-team all-Liberty district recognition were Saxon Beckett Brown as kick returner and Ellington Roane as punt returner.
Come cheer on and support your football team just down the road at Washington-Liberty, tomorrow night at 7 pm, as they battle to make more Langley history!
