Strangling the Breath of God

We gather to worship reading, speaking, singing,
“Breathe on me, breath of God.”
All the while our siblings, God’s beloveds, cry out, “I can’t breathe!”
Breathe on me, breath of God. As if God’s children were not being strangled.
As if we weren’t being suffocated to death.
“I can’t breathe,” said Eric Garner.
“I can’t breathe,” said George Floyd.
When we strangle the breath of God’s children, we strangle the breath of God.
When one of God’s children can’t breathe, none of us can.
We cry out to our mother.
We cry out to our Mother God,
Send down your fire!
Send down your flame!
Burn away all that destroys your children.
Consume all that consumes your children.
Burn away
Systemic racism.
White supremacy.
Xenophobia.
Heterosexism.
Anti-semitism.
Transphobia.
Sexual exploitation.
Economic injustice.
Environmental injustice.
May we be your kindling, on which your flames of passion land.
May we burn brightly for justice.
May we burn brightly for righteousness.
May we burn brightly for George Floyd, and for Eric Garner, and for Breonna Taylor, and for Ahmaud Arbery.
Come, burn in us, Holy Spirit, so that we might all be your fire in your world.
