1. Shop and support the PTSA! The PTSA gives resources to our staff and teachers, providing our students with many educational opportunities above and beyond. We are launching a new shopping platform! Shop using our link, and a portion of the sale will flow back to help support Langley's students! Just follow this link. On that page, you can shop, and you can download the app to your phone to remind you to use that link as you shop. Our test run with only a handful of people resulted in a $25 donation, so use this link when you shop! Now go buy that new spring outfit you had your eye on!

Tomorrow, Fri, Mar 28, Anna Brown and Jordan Payne will be leading a book talk in the Lecture Hall at 9:00 am on Jennifer Wallace’s book, Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic – and What We Can Do About It. Great support for Anna and Jordan and good conversation for our school community.

service hour deadline: Class of 2025, all service hours must be entered and verified in X2Vol no later than Wed, Apr 25. Service hours are not required for graduation but are needed to apply for the Service Cord and specific seals. Hours that will be considered must have been entered between Jul 1, 2021 – Apr 25, 2025. Hours submitted prior to Jul 1, 2021 will not count towards the service cord or seals.
When entering hours into X2Vol, make sure to review the Service Learning Guidelines.

empowering our kids with guidance on substance abuse: Come to the final Sophomore Class Forum on Mon, Apr 7 in the Lecture Hall. Meet Langley’s Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Jennifer Maddox-Byrd and learn about her role as a confidential counselor advising both students and parents. She will address parental concerns, stigmas, protective factors, resources and how to best talk to your student about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Socialize with other Class of 2027 parents starting at 9 am. The program begins at 9:30 am. Park in the bus loop directly behind the school and enter through door 9.

what's next?: preparing for sophomore year: Our last Freshman Parent Forum of the year will be Apr 22 at 9:30 am in the LHS Lecture Hall. Join us for coffee and the chance to talk with other parents before the forum at 9 am. LHS College and Career Specialist Karen Burke will discuss developing a high school resume and helping your student prepare for their sophomore year while prioritizing their mental health. We hope to see you there!

Calling all runners and walkers: The 6th Annual Bands on the Run 5K is on Sun, Apr 6 at 8 am!
This event is open to the entire community and benefits the Langley HS and Cooper MS bands. Friends and family of Langley, Cooper and the elementary schools of the Langley pyramid are especially invited. All ages are welcome. Run the course like a pro or walk the course with a friend! April is the Month of the Military Child! This month-long celebration of FCPS military-connected students raises awareness and recognizes the resilience of military-connected youth and thanks them for their service as part of a military family. Apr 9 is designated as “Purple Up!” Day and everyone is encouraged to wear purple (the combination of all the military service branch colors) to celebrate and thank our military-connected students for their service. On Apr 9, Langley HS will recognize our military connected students in the Lecture Hall during Saxon Time with a Chick-Fil-A brunch sponsored by the PTSA. Parents are welcome too. Parents and students RSVP to LHS Family Liaison Julie Zimmerman Hohl at jbzimmerman@fcps.edu if you can attend.
| | Last week our Langley students participated in their 6th Saxon Service event of the year! We want to thank all the students, some months as many as 300, and parent volunteers who have given their time to help those in need. We are incredibly proud of the contributions and positive impact the students have made in our community. |
To date, our Saxons have achieved the following:
- Made approximately 50 blankets to donate to Embry Rucker Shelter to help keep people warm.
- Created 200 cat toys and 140 dog toys for the Fairfax Humane Society.
- Folded and contributed over 250 Cranes for Cranes for Cancer.
- Designed 100 uplifting cards for children staying at a local Ronald McDonald House.
- Written military notes to show our appreciation for our service members.
- Decorated and assembled over 1,000 treat bags which are handed out at our local food pantry, Share of McLean.
- Made colorful beaded bracelets to give to students at a local Title I elementary school.
- And much more
Our last Saxon Service of the year is Fri, Apr 11. Students can earn one service hour by attending. Encourage your Saxon to participate, and to help make a difference in our community!

Join LHS Psychologist Anna Brown and Social Worker Jordan Payne for an engaging parent conversation on Jennifer Wallace’s book, Never Enough. Never Enough “takes readers on a journey into the heart of toxic achievement culture and offers practical, actionable solutions for families, schools and communities.”
Wallace concludes that “kids who receive feedback that they matter, no matter what, are more likely to have the resilience, self-confidence and psychological security to survive.” Jennifer Wallace is an award-winning journalist who began her career at 60 Minutes and contributes to the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. The Northern Virginia Regional College Fair will be held Wed, Apr 9, at 6:30-8:30 pm at the Eagle Bank Arena, in Fairfax, VA. The Northern Virginia Regional College fair welcomes more than 1,500 high school students from the Northern Virginia area and helps them make connections with institutions across the United States. Students will have the opportunity to visit with over 150 colleges and universities.

Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 of our school buses to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”). Warnings for drivers will begin on Wed, Apr 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Mon, May 12.
FCPS appreciates its collaboration with local law enforcement partners to improve road safety and reduce accidents. More information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that FCPS works with county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school can be found on this webpage.

scc parent discussion group: The Safe Community Coalition offers monthly parent discussion groups facilitated by licensed mental health professionals. This month’s topic, Depression and Self Harm, delves into the underlying psychological factors, early warning signs and effective intervention strategies
Melissa Sporn, Ph.D. and Sarah Tyler, LCSW will provide insight into how to offer compassionate support and will share the latest therapeutic approaches that can foster healing and resilience in those affected.
This session is designed to equip caregivers with practical tools to make a positive impact. This discussion will be hosted at the McLean Community Center on Apr 10 at 7 pm.
