Bill Evans Live In Buenos Aires Two Releases From Resonance Records
Morning Glory: The 1973 Concert at the Teatro Gran Rex
Available on Record Store Day APRIL 23
Inner Spirit: The 1979 Concert at the Teatro General San Martin
Available on CD and Digital Download April 30th
|

Bill Evans' use of impressionist harmony, interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continues to influence jazz pianists today.
Evans left the Miles Davis band and began his career as a leader in 1959.
Now, his label, Resonance Records, brings Evans fans two rare live concert recordings from the 70s. The new recordings are the seventh Evans Estate-approved Resonance releases, and capture beautiful performances during turbulent times in history of Argentina and Latin America.
Morning Glory, features Evans’ longest-running rhythm section of bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell, who had supported the pianist since 1968.
The live date was recorded at the Teatro Gran Rex on June 24, 1973 - all during a heavy political weather in Argentina, thus, its last-minute scheduling at 10 in the morning! Gomez recalls the era in Argentina in the liner notes, “things were turbulent in the whole region. Juan Perón had just returned from exile, which caused violence in the streets... The tension was palpable” (just a few months before Allende was overthrown and killed during a coup in Chile).
This was Evans’ first concert in the country. The set was highlighted by a surprise performance of a bolero, “Esta tarde vi llover,” by the noted Latin American composer Armando Manzanero – which became a triumph for Evans.
Inner Spirit was recorded at the Teatro General San Martin on Sept. 27, 1979 with Evan's last trio, which featured Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera, both veterans of Woody Herman’s band. This recording will be subsequently issued on Apr. 30, as two-CD sets and digital downloads. Evans died in September of 1980.
Evans brought a Latin touch to his concert repertoire, with the addition of “Minha,” a composition by Brazilian composer Francis Hime (recorded four years earlier). He also played such recent additions to his set as “Letter to Evan,” a new piece played solo and dedicated to his son, and “Theme From M*A*S*H.”
The climax of the concert came in Miles Davis’ “Nardis”; the great showpiece of the pianist’s last gigs,
it stretched to a length of 17 minutes in Buenos Aires, sporting a nearly eight-minute solo introduction and inspired solos by his band members.

In Morning Glory and Inner Spirit, two new albums by Bill Evans, old is new again, optimism and brilliance outshine the dark and turbulent times in Latin American history of the 70s, or today, for
that matter. The performances offer hope and beauty that are perennial as the flower and carry an emotional resilience that endures.

A Deluxe booklets feature rare photos from the concerts (some by Argentine drummer Ángel Alberto “Tito” Villalba), interviews with the musicians, overviews by authors Marc Myers and Claudio Parisi, and observations by pianists Richie Beirach and Enrico Pieranunzi.
"When the main part of the program ended, I found myself crying like many others in the audience. We were crying because we thought Bill Evans had come out for the last time for a bow. But we were all surprised and thrilled when he came out again and sat down to give us more,” says Argentinian professor Oscar Daniel Chilkowski, who attended the concert.
“These tapes came to us in 2018 from Argentine music journalist Roque Di Pietro, who contacted me and explained the existence of Carlos Melero’s recordings. I had known about them being available as bootlegs, so George and I leapt at the opportunity to once again right the wrongs of the past, and release both concerts officially with the support of Bill Evans’s family," says Zev Feldman, producer and co-president (with founder George Klabin) of Resonance.

Introducing The Daking Mic Pre 4T
Soulful Circuitry Meets Proprietary Problem-Solving Features
|
|
Above: Brad Lunde with Geoff Daking
|
Perfect for studio, live, and broadcast audio recording, the Mic-Pre 4T features 4 high end pre-amps in 1U of rack space, Jensen input/output transformers, and has now added variable high pass filters on each channel.
The new Daking Mic Pre 4T is designed for the widest possible range of inputs, from vintage, low-gain ribbons, to high-gain modern condensers, and instruments via the DI. Avoiding clipping and distortion is critical for error-free capture of that once-in-a-lifetime magical performance. Daking’s variable low pass filters make it possible to have a different low-filter setting on each of the four input channels, preventing unwanted over saturation of the transformer. "The Instrument DI passes through the ultra linear Jensen output transformer for one of the best DI’s around. The Daking Mic Pre 4T is the one pre-amp that’s right for many different sources, rather than the costly “different pre-amps for different sources” approach," says Brad Lunde. Watch the YouTube interview with Trans Audio Group's Brad Lunde, where Geoff Daking goes into great detail on the design and features of the new Mic-Pre 4T. Daking Audio gear is built in USA and distributed by TransAudio Group.
Built in the USA, Daking uses only high-end parts like Jensen input and output transformers in a high-end design using all-discrete transistor Class A circuitry. How's that for Soulful circuitry meets proprietary problem-solving features? Order yours today!

Godfrapp
Felt Mountain
Pre Order from Mute Bank here
Mute/BMG announces the reissue of iconic debut album from Alison Goldfrapp & Will Gregory, Felt Mountain, on 25th March 2022.
Originally released on 11th September 2000, the Mercury Prize nominated album has amassed over 250,000 sales in the UK alone.
Alongside the rescheduled Felt Mountain Live Tour, which will take place in UK between 31st March and 15th April 2022. Felt Mountain, often cited as Goldfrapp’s most influential record, will be presented on limited edition 140g Gold vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve which also includes brand new sleeve notes from
Lior Phillips in an 8pp 12” x 12” Booklet
Before finding critical acclaim and international chart success with vocalist Alison Goldfrapp — Supernature sold over one million copies as Goldfrapp’s third album (featuring striking smash hit ‘Ooh La La’), the Bristol-born multi-talented composer, keyboardist, and producer predominantly recorded and toured throughout the Eighties with Bath-based rock/pop phenomenon Tears For Fears and later performed with other big name ‘local’ acts, including singer-songwriter/humanitarian activist Peter Gabriel and trip-hop pioneers Portishead. It was around this time that Will Gregory began a lifelong love affair with those trusty two-way passives, playing their part in putting him on the road to Goldfrapp glory.
“I managed to source a second-hand pair of SCM20s, because I didn’t have a lot of money at the time,” he begins. “But I’ve always used them as my main reference monitors, and I’ve taken them to all the mixing sessions we’ve done with Goldfrapp. I know where I am with them, so they’ve stood me in good stead, because they have this quality of not bringing anything to the party.”
Invaluable for referencing that all-important bass end on Goldfrapp’s eagerly-awaited studio album, about which the dynamic duo themselves collectively commented: “Silver Eye belongs more to the electronic world of Supernature and Black Cherry. We’ve worked with some fantastic people on this album and we’re really excited to share it with you.”
"For countless fans listening to this day and for those involved in its creation still feeling its magic, Felt Mountain retains every ounce of meaning and depth."
- Lior Phillips
|
|
Will Gregory's Moog Ensemble first performed together as part of the Bath Festival in 2005, recreating some of the ‘Switched on Bach’ arrangements of Wendy Carlos in the Seventies.
As one half of the electronic music sensation Goldfrapp, the keyboard-player and composer Will Gregory is one of the UK’s leading advocates of using synthesizers and electronic instruments to create new sounds and reinvent old ones.
The band perform a mixture of specially composed music, transcriptions of classical works, and their own versions of music from popular culture and film scores.
The current lineup comprises Will Gregory, Adrian Utley, Simon Haram, Dan Moore, Graham Fitkin, Ruth Wall, Vyv Hope-Scott, Eddie Parker, Ross Hughes and Georgie Ward.
Ad far as Will Gregory’s well-honed listening skills are concerned — when stepping outside his ATC comfort zone: “I’ve had to mix on other speakers when working elsewhere, but then when I play those mixes back on the SCM20s I end up making more changes — put it that way. Whatever else I play them on after I’ve made those changes, I don’t want to make any more changes, so — in that sense — you can trust them to be accurate.”
All of which rather begs the question: why the need to move on up to ATC’s acclaimed SCM25A Pro three-way actives? An answer lies somewhat closer to home.
Home is where the heart is, after all, and home for Will Gregory is a spacious Sixties bungalow also housing his primary studio setup (as well as a synth-based room and another room dedicated to analogue drum sounds and tape manipulation).
While Will Gregory has not entirely forsaken his passive pair of beloved SCM20s, the larger SCM25A Pro three-way active studio monitors met with his approval in more ways than one: “What’s good about the SCM25A Pros is that they’re more muscular; they’ve got more bass end, and you can control that because they’ve got ports on the side, so you can decide how much or little you want, which is great. I love the totally practical, physical way that you can just remove or insert the bungs to change the bass, but, either way, they fill the room much better than the SCM20s.”
Tricky as it may sound, residential room size played a part in influencing Will Gregory’s studious SCM25A Pro purchasing decision. “I’m in quite a big room now,” notes its owner, adding: “I’m here a lot of the time, so it functions like a home. I think they used to have more room in the Sixties, so it’s got this large sitting room with a lovely picture window, which means you can see some nature while working. So I love it from that point of view, having spent so many years underground, which is where musicians seem to put themselves a lot the time in studios for some strange reason. But because we’re detached here, we’re not going to disturb our neighbors unduly, so it’s ideal. But when I’m working with other people in there we clearly can’t all fit in the sweet spot between the speakers, yet they manage to throw the sweet spot quite a long way into the room, so everyone can share it. They’re also fantastic for just ramping up the vibe a little bit, but they have all that accuracy, so when you do sit yourself down in the sweet spot they’re absolutely invaluable.”

Madison McFerrin's Soul-Appella Sound
|
|
The pop-leaning vocal loop experimentation of Madison McFerrin is getting deserving attention. She is an independent singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, NY. Her critically acclaimed a cappella EP series, Finding Foundations, led Questlove to dub her sound “soul-appella.”
She has mesmerized crowds on her debut US and European tours with her powerful one-woman show. Her performance led legendary KCRW DJ Anne Litt to remark, “there’s some sort of joy and beauty in the way that she performs that really drew me in all that much more.” Madison’s You + I EP expanded upon her a cappella sound by pairing her timeless voice with modern production by her brother, Taylor McFerrin.
Most recently, her newfound production skills were showcased on her viral track, ”GUILTY,” which perfectly captured the mood of joy and relief following the historic verdict in the trial for the murder of George Floyd.

She will focus on the ever-expanding new audiences for classical and jazz repertoire, driving artist strategy while continuing to amplify storytelling across the division, working alongside label colleagues, artists and UMG Global Communications.
George Irwin (left bottom) is promoted to the newly created role of Audience & Analytics Manager, reporting to Paul Moseley, SVP, Content & Data. Joining GCJ as an intern, Irwin swiftly became indispensable, working across content and audience analysis. His valuable insight and forward-thinking approach will inform and elevate worldwide digital campaigns.

The internet has truly changed the possibilities of discovery and it’s all up to the individual to take advantage of the opportunities. I've noticed many of us who work in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles prefer to contact each other through Instagram. Most of the time, we exchange our @s instead of phone numbers and contact each other through Instagram DMs.
Collaborating with other musicians/artists online can give you more exposure. You get introduced to their audience, potentially making new fans in the process and vice versa.
Helps to Help Each Other The music industry is very competitive in general, with everyone trying to get their songs and projects in front of more people. On Social Media platforms like Instagram, it’s a little different. Having a big network on Instagram with other artists and musicians is very important when growing your career. Being able to support each other on Instagram can help benefit everyone.
Stories is a feature that was originally popularized by Snapchat but was adopted by Instagram and became a hit on the platform. You can post pictures and videos onto your Instagram story that will last up to 24 hours from the time that it’s posted. There are also features on Stories such as stickers where you can post polls and questions that can be answered by your followers. You can use these features in creative ways to engage with your audience, allowing them to feel more involved with you and your music career.
Insta LIVE Like YouTube, going live on Instagram is a great way of connecting with your followers. You can have real-time conversations with them during your live stream. There’s also the option of having fans join your live broadcast as you can invite anyone to guest stream with you.
Create Your Visual Brand Instagram has been a visual social media platform. Though posts appear random, it's helpful to add a theme or pattern to your posts.
Share Your Music Portfolio Having an Instagram feed filled with images and videos of some of your best work can come in handy, especially when meeting others who are in the music industry.
Time Your Posts You can promote as much as you want, but the timing of your uploads is one of the defining factors for the success of your IGTV videos. Take a look at your insights so you can plan your uploads to be posted at the best times to reach your audience.
Gear up! In the social universe, helps to get the visuals right. Having the right equipment and some knowledge of lighting, cropping a picture, staging, all come handy. Then there's gear -- will you need a Tripod, cell phone mount, directional mics for smartphones? check out our ULTIMATE InstagramTV (IGTV) Guide for Musicians.
Creativity always outshines average. Above all, have fun, inspire and stay connected with your fans!

Power of Persuasion And Investing In Your Music
How to Get A Producer's Attention
|
|
studioexpresso receives many music submissions and producer requests. Often, those with the following qualities get quick response.
CLARITY express your DESIRE clearly and use your unique creative tone. Offer Visuals when helpful -- Youtube, Instagram, Spotify links...include performance or interview links. Offer your expectation.
INTENTION explain why the person you're requesting to work with is the right candidate. How you became a fan and why this project of 3 or 20 songs (with titles and links) would make an amazing collaboration or work for hire. Music speaks loudest - Provide links to your music or artist page. Better yet, for new projects, provide a rough mix, or demo. Mention if the song has vocals or just instrumental. Show your commitment to quality and how you plan to release and promote the song(s), specially, if you're not on a label or with a manager, at this time.
SCHEDULE Show respect for time. Tell us you've chosen to complete your project in 2023 or you have a short window to complete next month, before embarking on your tour. Perhaps this is the year you've decided to invest and grow your catalog or intellectual property. Don't be shy to ask when monthly payments toward your recording costs -- engineer, studio, musicians, etc -- are possible. More artists prefer to take control of their own destiny and find creatove ways to finance projects, be it working on a song or a full album. Above all, get there quick. Short is sweet!
Years ago I received a request from a well-known artist/DJ. His request for an arranger is framed on my wall. His ask was brilliant and so became the final work. I wish I could share it with you. Well, you all know him well, and that's no accident.
Exercise brilliance in your self-expression, in music and in words. 2022 is still a new year - make it good!

Quintessential 90’s at Super Bowl & Beyond
|
|
Nostalgia comforts by making us feel connected to one another and to a shared past. 90s is being resurrected in what appears to be a mini-renaissance and that includes love for hip-hop music, evidenced in this year's Super Bowl Half-time Show.
Ol' school dominated Superbowl half-time show. 90s Hip-hop heavyweights Dr. Dre opened the show with The Next Episode, Eminem sang Lose Yourself, Mary J. Blige performed Family Affair, and we heard Kendrick Lamar's Alright and Fitty's In Da Club. You could say this year's Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at SoFi statdium in Los Angeles was dope.
LA Rams won. But, this was also a big win for the music that inspired a generation with its culture, now enjoying a revival. Fashion in the ’90s was hard to define. Hip-hop was doing bright patterns, color blocks, and oversized denim. High-end designers were doing minimalism, and deconstruction. For midrange brands, meanwhile, logos became the whole look. These fashion trends too are still with us today.
“I’m grateful to Jay-Z, Roc Nation, the NFL, and Pepsi as well as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar for joining me in what will be an unforgettable cultural moment,” Dr Dre said before the show.
90s was a cultural moment that's lasting like a good bottle of wine. Watch studioexpresso interviews with music creators of today Matt Forger (MJJ), Andre Fischer (Natalie Cole), Ken Allardyce (Green Day), Niko Bolas (Neil Young) and Jim Scott (Tom Petty) who worked with quintessential 90s artists. Their songs continue to fill the playlists worldwide today. It's music that lives and moves.

The Sunrise: Blue Skies Over Wheat Fields
From Rome to Rotterdam and Berlin to Bratislava, Europe has been turning its landmarks blue and yellow as a show of support for Ukraine. Here's how to mix and layer this cocktail we call "The Sunrise."
Ingredients:
pineapple juice and Blue Curaçao
Pour the pineapple juice into your shot glass and then gently pour the Blue Curaçao over a bar spoon against the inside of your shot glass, so they don't mix. Layer it and enjoy!

Supporting Creators & Self-Expression

"What we want is freedom with responsibility."
John Lennon's Give Peace A Chance rings true today. One adult calls it "peace keeping operation," another one calls it "an invasion," when it comes to aggression in Ukraine.
However, any child knows who is the new bully on the block. People are calling to, STOP WAR, on an increasingly socially-connected and transparent world stage. Music carries message of peace and empowers and inspires people to choose their way of life and their leaders. Power to People, Music and Peace.
