studioexpresso celebrates Diane Warren during Women's History Month
Thirteen may not be her lucky number. But, being nominated 13X at the Oscars is testimony for her songwriting prowess. She's an Emmy and Grammy winner with 15 nominations. Born and raised in Van Nuys, California, Diane Warren is one of the most prolific, and sought- after pop music composers in history. Warren has penned more than 75 Top 10 hits for such artists as Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, and LeAnn Rimes. Her debut album Diane Warren: The Cave Sessions Vol. 1 (below) was released worldwide on August 27, 2021 via Di-Namic Records/BMG. The album features guest artists to include: Ty Dolla $ign, Maren Morris, John Legend, Luis Fonsi, Jon Batiste, Pentatonix, G-Eazy, Carlos Santana, LP, Celine Dion, Darius Rucker, and James Morrison. A two-time Golden Globe award winner, Warren's songs have been featured in more than 100 motion pictures. Recently, she won a Golden Globe and received an Academy Award nomination for the original song ‘Io Si (Seen)’ from the 2020 film The Life Ahead.
This year at the 94th Academy Awards, her song Somehow You Do is nominated for Best original Song.
Congrats also go to our friend Leslie Lewis who was involved with two Oscar-Nominated Best Original Song Nominees this year. "The first when Diane Warren asked my suggestion of who should record her song Somehow You Do for the film Four Good Days. I immediately thought Reba McEntire who I was looking for film music opportunities for. Diane loved the idea. After Reba said yes, the great team of Tony Brown produced and Chuck Ainlay mixed the beautiful song. The next (now the Oscar winner), penned by Billie Eilish and Finneas - No Time To Die started almost 3 yrs ago and is my second Bond music experience since Tomorrow Never Dies. Love them so much," says Lewis in a post.

Some of the hits and notable songs that Warren has written throughout her career include “Because You Loved Me” (Celine Dion) from Up Close and Personal, “How Do I Live” (Trisha Yearwood) from Con Air and (LeAnn Rimes), “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” (Whitney Houston), “Can’t Take That Away” (Mariah Carey), “Look Away” (Chicago), “Have You Ever” (Brandy), “Un-Break My Heart” (Toni Braxton), “If I Could Turn Back Time (Cher), “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (Aerosmith) from Armageddon, “I Was Here” (Beyoncé), “Til It Happens To You”* (Lady Gaga) from The Hunting Ground, “Stand Up For Something”* (Andra Day and Common) from Marshall, “I’ll Fight”* (Jennifer Hudson) from RBG documentary, among many others.
"Diane takes everyday situations and turns them into hit songs," says producer David Foster.
Warren says the last 3 songs* are inspired by special people who stand up for causes. It's her trilogy and we hope that's just for starts.
Warren's independent publishing company, Realsongs, controls the rights to more than 600 Warren compositions, and her songs have been used in more than 50 movies, ranging from Up Close and Personal and The Preacher's Wife to Caddyshack II and Karate Kid III. She has been nominated for Grammy Awards, Academy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards. She is the only female composer to be named ASCAP's Writer of the Year three times. By one estimate, Warren has been responsible for the sale of more than 125 million records.
The Diane Warren Foundation was created to support philanthropic causes in areas close to Diane's heart, dedicated to the support of animal rights & protection, enriching lives of the elderly and people suffering from life-threatening illnesses, along with music related charities.
“I am writing new songs all the time, and I really think I’m writing my best songs right now,” says Warren.
The song that put her on the map in 1985 was "Rhythm of the Night" performed by DeBarge. I know, now you'll be humming it all day and night!

Most of you know The Wilson sisters as successful entrepreneurs and world-class studio owners of Bad Animals X (designed by nonzero architecture) in Seattle, WA where Heart, R.E.M., Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden and Alice in Chains recorded memorable albums. The Wilson sisters owned the studio form 1991-1997.
In January of this year, Round Hill Music announced acquisition of a significant share of the master artist royalties of Nancy Wilson and entered into a long-term agreement to administer the neighboring rights income of her catalog. The catalog includes the No. 1 hit “These Dreams” that was certified platinum five times. Further classic tracks in the catalog include “Barracuda”, “Magic Man”, “Alone” and “Crazy On You”.

studioexpresso celebrates Nancy Wilson
during Women's History Month
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (2013) and iconic artist, Nancy Wilson has recorded 16 albums and sold over 35 million recordings worldwide with her band Heart. Within that history-making career, her new album You and Me represents her very first solo studio album with a tender title track You and Me.
Well, kind'a her first. Actually, her first is Live at McCabes, and her second is Baby Guitars.
Wilson's new album of twelve songs sounds like an intimate conversation between two friends, a mother and daughter, or perhaps between her and you, the listener.
You and Me was recorded at home in Northern California with musicians contributing remotely during Covid.
The title track You And Me, celebrates moms, including her own. The sound is comforting like a chicken soup for the soul, just when you need it! Her beautiful voice shines over the lyrics: "You and me. Mama, welcome back, I feel you here. Gravity Always pulls us back together. For all time." The accompanying video for the song features family footage with sister Ann and their mom.
On her new album, Wilson brings former collaborators on her side to include lyricist Sue Eniss, and longtime Heart drummer, Ben Smith. The album offers several covers with fresh interpretations for fans old and new. There's Dreams, by The Cranberries with Liv Warfield (of Prince’s New Power Generation). The Dragon is an ode to Layne Staley (Alice in Chains). Pearl Jam's 90s hit Daughter brings Wilson's female perspective, Springsteen's The Rising and Simon & Garfunkle's The Boxer, are among the inspired covers on the album.
In Between, co-penned with Wilson's son, Curtis, features a B3 organ and its lyrics echo recurring topics like division and marginalization. The coming of age themes of spirituality and unconditional love are throughout. Walk Away is the break-up song and features Wilson's familiar voice embraced by orchestration.
You and Me is released on May 7 via her new label,
Carry On Music. It is a touching tribute to moms everywhere including those living in our hearts. It's also a welcome anthem for healing a world that's recovering from a pandemic with the looming news of war. Somehow, You and Me makes you feel that it's going to be all right.
A guitar hero to many, Nancy Wilson must have her own guitar heroes, among them, Edwards Van Halen.
A beautiful instrumental closes the album called 4Edward.
“I felt like I was once again able to reconnect with my pre-Heart self, my college-girl self, creating poetic, intimate and romantic songs, which pretty much is what I first brought in to Heart.”
Wilson stays in touch with her fans who sing Heart covers on social media - What About Love, These Dreams, and Barracuda. Now a new generation of musicians are discovering Heart songs.
2022 promises to be a busy year for philanthropist and entrepreneur Nancy Wilson who has appeared with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall with plans to do more.

Yebba (née Abbey Smith), not to be confused with the luxury leather goods brand based in Brussels (spelled with a single "b"), is the musician with a pristine and soulful voice and mature songwriting abilities. Plus, Abbey spelled backwards, Yebba, is a nickname her mother gave her. Yebba’s father works as a preacher, and that may have contributed to her spiritual vocal style and depth. She started writing songs in her bedroom as "a way to cope," as she found ways to honor her mother through her music. First she offered free downloads of her song, My Mind on her website and asked fans to donate to Bring Change to Mind, a mental-health-awareness charity. She remains an outspoken mental health advocate. Now, she is collaborating with everyone from Ed Sheeran to Drake. On September 10, her debut album, Dawn was released by RCA/Sony Records. The 12-track album is executive produced by Mark Ronson and features key collaborators like The Roots, A$AP Rocky, Kaytrananda, Pino Palladino, Smino, James Francies, and Smokey Hormel.
Watch her perform The Age of Worry presented by Spotify, produced and arranged by James Francies and Abbey Smith. Recorded by John Rooney Live from Electric Lady Studio featuring Questlove on drums.

Sound Anchor and The Mavericks Land At Black Bird Studio
Sound Anchor is designed, manufactured and now distributed by Trans Audio Group, USA

|
No matter which one of the nine Black Bird rooms you book, the walls talk recorded music history.
More recently it was Niko Bolas (right with drummer Paul Deakin) cooking up some Mavericks magic in the Blackbird studio with lead singer and songwriter Raul Malo. Their first-ever debut, all-Spanish album, was released as a deluxe collector's issue on the band’s own Mono Mundo label. Entitled simply En Español, produced by Malo and the band’s long-time collaborator Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Prince, Sheryl Crow). The collection represents a diversity of musical styles and cultural traditions, from tender boleros to brassy mariachi to re-imagined Afro-Cuban classics. The inspiration for this labor of love is rooted in the immigrant experience of the band’s founder, Malo. Seven of the tunes are familiar gems drawn from the vast Latin American songbook, while five are originals written or co-written by Malo. The line-up includes Malo’s fellow Miamian and charter band member, Paul Deakin on drums and vibraphone, as well as veteran Jerry Dale McFadden, who joined in 1993. Eddie Perez, a Mexican American guitarist from Los Angeles, is the band’s youngest and newest member, becoming a Maverick.
Their new Quarantunes Vol. 1, out for a month today is already enjoying 100,000 streams on spotify.

Introducing The Daking Mic Pre 4T
Soulful Circuitry Meets Proprietary Problem-Solving Features
|
|
Above: Brad Lunde with Geoff Daking
|
Perfect for studio, live, and broadcast audio recording, the Mic-Pre 4T features 4 high end pre-amps in 1U of rack space, Jensen input/output transformers, and has now added variable high pass filters on each channel.
The new Daking Mic Pre 4T is designed for the widest possible range of inputs, from vintage, low-gain ribbons, to high-gain modern condensers, and instruments via the DI. Avoiding clipping and distortion is critical for error-free capture of that once-in-a-lifetime magical performance. Daking’s variable low pass filters make it possible to have a different low-filter setting on each of the four input channels, preventing unwanted over saturation of the transformer. "The Instrument DI passes through the ultra linear Jensen output transformer for one of the best DI’s around. The Daking Mic Pre 4T is the one pre-amp that’s right for many different sources, rather than the costly “different pre-amps for different sources” approach," says Brad Lunde. Watch the YouTube interview with Trans Audio Group's Brad Lunde, where Geoff Daking goes into great detail on the design and features of the new Mic-Pre 4T. Daking Audio gear is built in USA and distributed by TransAudio Group.
Built in the USA, Daking uses only high-end parts like Jensen input and output transformers in a high-end design using all-discrete transistor Class A circuitry. How's that for Soulful circuitry meets proprietary problem-solving features? Order yours today!

The Tunnel Of Juana Molina Music
APRIL 23, 2022 AT 5 PM PDT
Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre
May 7th at the Troubadour, Los Angeles
|
|
|
While the world is listening to a comedian turned leader of the free world president, there's another comedian turned musician, who also deserves your ear. Argentinian singer-songwriter Juana Molina has had a long career and shows no signs of slowing down. Her music is experimental, punk, rock, rhythmic, pulsating with words that you may or may not understand, but she puts light on human obsessions, and behaviors that require no translation. In one of her songs, Cosoco, she takes cues from the sound of a sewing machine. In its video, she plays part of one of many garment factory workers and also the role of factory boss. It's fun, funny, and entertaining.
She began learning to play guitar at the age of five. Following a military coup in 1976, she and her family fled to Paris, where they lived in exile for six years and Molina’s musical exposure expanded. After returning to Argentina, she began looking for work to help fund her musical aspirations and was subsequently sidetracked when she became a famous TV comedian. But, she never lost sight of what she really wanted to do. In 1996, she risked her career by releasing her first album. Her audience grew beyond her TV comedy fans and she has received worldwide recognition. Her most recent album, Halo, is released this year. Juana Molina has toured extensively in the US, Japan and Europe. Her live performances combine live loops, and effects created on-the-fly. Her deft acoustic guitar playing, creates a lush sound as well as offers a visually compelling experience.
This month she posts on fbook page her tour that ends at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on May 7th and says:
"I will be touring in the USA and Canada this spring and will improvise for you, I’ll start with songs as you know them and then hope I'll be able to drag you in a tunnel of music."

Prior to that, Vuernick was a senior executive at the New York-based independent dance-music specialist Ultra Music, where he held A&R, marketing and sales positions.
“During the years that I’ve worked with Jeremy at CMG,” explains Jubelirer, “he has always impressed me with his creative vision and tremendous passion for great artistry and music.”
Vuernick “possesses the rare ability to work with artists, producers and songwriters across nearly every genre of music, and has earned enormous respect from the broad creative community.”
Among those artists Vuernick has worked with is Halsey who, after he signed her, emerged as a global multi-platinum star. Halsey heads into the 2022 Grammy Awards with a nomination in the category of Best Alternative Album, for If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.
Vuernick also signed deals with EDM standout Marshmello, A&R’d Paul McCartney's Grammy-nominated McCartney III Imagined, and worked closely with numerous artists across CMG’s labels, including Katy Perry, Alesso and many more.

RIP Taylor Hawkins
February 17, 1972 – March 25, 2022
Foo Fighter's announced Taylor Hawkins' sudden passing in an online post late Friday night and called it a "tragic and untimely loss." The band had been scheduled to play at a festival in Bogota, Colombia, on Friday night. Hawkins, an electrifying performer with a stage presence that projected from behind his drum kit, had a history of known drug use. Hawkins’ final concert was Sunday at another festival in San Isidro, Argentina. Hawkins was Alanis Morrissette’s touring drummer when he joined Foo Fighters in 1997. In Grohl’s 2021 book The Storyteller, he called Hawkins his “brother from another mother, my best friend.” Hawkins also co-starred in Foo Fighters’ recently released horror-comedy film, Studio 666.
"His (TH) loving spirit and immense talent will never be forgotten," posted RCA. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Alison, their three children, the Hawkins family, Grohl and band, friends, and the entire Foo Fighters community across the world.
"Ironically, the song I wrote with Taylor (RIP) and Duff is called Party At The Angel Ballroom… I guess now he’s there…"
--Nancy Wilson
Hawkin's last Twitter post says: "Navarro~Hawkins~Chaney (NHC) New EP Intakes & Outtakes out now!"
"Maybe I'm afraid of a long Goodbye, Prisoners don't escape, they just love to die"
--NHC from I could be somebody Else

Women and girls make up half the world’s population. Without tapping into their incredible potential, communities limit their ability to grow and progress. As Black History and Women’s History Month ends, we congratulate our readers, and recognize all you special women. We salute Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson with her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. We remember Madeleine K. Albright (May 15, 1937 - March 23, 2022), a daughter of Czech refugees who landed in the US, where she served as the first woman secretary of state. Shout out also goes to Deborah Dugan who continues to be an agent for change. Her career began as an attorney. She served as an executive at EMI Record Group, as president of Disney Publishing Worldwide, and she was the first woman CEO in Recording Academy's 62-year history. Now she is the chief strategist at Handshake. Earlier this month she gave a keynote at San Diego's Women Week where she said:
"Your perspective, values, and impact are needed--don't leave them at the door!!"

Until next month, Express your voice and passion in music and in life.
