A Renaissance man is defined as a person who has wide interests and is expert in several areas. By these standards, Peter Asher is a Renaissance man with a full life in Music.
Asher is a 2X Grammy- winner Producer of the Year for his work with James Taylor & Linda Ronstadt and others. Astonishingly, he remains a sought after producer today, having been involved in various capacities in modern music history, for over fifty years -- as artist, label executive, artist manager, record producer, author, DJ and entrepreneur.
Like most, Asher began as a musician, making hits with Peter & Gordon (Lennon-McCartney's "World Without Love" Del Shannon's
"I Go To Pieces" ++) in London. Peter moved on to make history as A & R Director of the Beatles' Apple Records.
Did you know? Asher was one of the first producers to credit the musicians that played on his sessions, realizing how important they were to the success of each song and album. One needs only to visit AllMusic to appreciate this man's vast body of work. But, let's look at some of his most recent credits.
Asher-produced a CD by actor Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, “The Long Awaited Album”, was released September 22, 2017, and is one of several production efforts Steve Martin has asked Mr. Asher to oversee (including a 2018 PBS TV special with Martin Short and the Steep Canyon Rangers).
Peter produced “Love has Come for You,” an album by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell — the title track a Grammy Winner in 2014- and the stage show based on it, “Bright Star,” which garnered 5 Tony nominations in its run on Broadway in 2016. In 2018 he embarked on a project, "Revamped" to celebrate Elton John’s songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin. Among its highlights was Ed Sheeran’s taking on Candle in The Wind”, produced by Mr. Asher. The celebratory collection was a follow up to the Peter Asher-produced special edition of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” -released in March 2014 – which featured Ed Sheeran, Imelda May, Fall Out Boy, and others covering songs from that classic album. Asher has worked on numerous soundtracks (“Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Man Of Steel,” “Rush.”, etc), alongside the legendary Hans Zimmer. Notably Asher directed “Hans Zimmer Live!” tour of the USA and Europe in 2017. Last year Compass Records’ Red House imprint released the Peter Asher produced “Why Wait!” from Kate Taylor. James’ “Sister Kate” is backed by Albert Lee, Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Victoria Asher, Scarlet Rivera and more…look for many of the same cast to work on the new album by the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs… Mr. Asher is producing and aiming for a mid 2022 release. Read more here -- studioexrpesso met with Peter this month to learn more about his celebrated life and times.
On June 4, 2022 Asher will receive the iconic TEC Hall of Fame Award at NAMM, at the Hilton Anaheim, Pacific Ballroom. We were delighted to have Mr Asher as panelist @ NAMM 2016

Good Mourning + Mainstream Sellout
Machine Gun Kelly's Directorial debut + New Album
|
|
Machine Gun Kelly (MGK), born Colson Baker, won “Favorite Rock Artist” at last year’s American Music Awards. He's a poser. He's one of those pretty faces that's easy to like, add make up to (rhymes with break up), tattoos or outfits that say rock, punk, maybe goth, even pop! Heck, genres don't really matter here, it's how he connects to fans!
Take his five million fans flocking to social media to react to MGK’s engagement to singer/actor, Megan Fox.
MGK has a new album titled Sellout. He and Blink-182 drummer, Travis Barker (also produced Tickets to My Downfall) are back together on Sellout, featuring his daughter and Pete Davidson, on Twin Flame, Die in California and Fake Love. Emo Girl, somewhat catchy and Tik Tok-friendly, is a duet with fellow pop-punk revivalist Willow Smith.
The song could have tackled the subject of anxiety, mental illness better, but like Ay! featuring Lil Wayne, it touches the surface and runs. The music remains loyal to three-chord solos and clichés lyrics like “I love chaos/I love toxic/I love wreckage/I love falling," at times, echoing the soundtrack from Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation court trials! WW4 and 5150 are harder edged. No Baker, you're not a guitar God, yet. But, wait! Given MGK's likability, acting is a sure bet. His directorial debut, Good Mourning (with a U) with Mod Sun, is a stoner comedy. It's produced by Cedar Park Studios (“The Tax Collector”) and distributed by Open Road Films (“Spotlight,” “Studio 666”). Baker plays a movie star named London Clash who is happy and in love with his girlfriend of one year, Apple (Becky G). However, when he receives an implied breakup text from her on the same day as the most important meeting of his career, the day goes all downhill from there. Pal, Pete Davidson makes a cameo appearance. It's a summer pleaser with potential to become a cult classic, and put Baker on the map as actor, director and support Sellout.

New Spotify Digs DTLA

Machine Gun Kelly performing in LA (above) at Spotify's new digs downtown Los Angeles near the Art district Spotify founder Daniel Ek in front of New Los Angeles Studios (below L), Spotify engineer Jack Mason (below R)
|
|
Earlier this month Machine Gun Kelly's punk spirit went live with his Mainstream Sellout album release party at the new Spotify Studios, down town Los Angeles. The spot became an immersive album-themed space for fans and VIPs alike to enjoy an intimate secret show.
Spotify's founder and CEO Daniel Ek first had the idea for Spotify in 2002 when peer-to-peer music service Napster shut down and another illegal site Kazaa took over. Ek said he "realized that you can never legislate away from piracy. Laws can help, but it doesn't take away the problem." His solution was to create a service that was better than piracy and at the same time compensates the music industry.
As of April 2019, Spotify has 217 million active users and as of June 2017 it has raised over $2.5 billion in venture funding.
Enter Spotify LA. The new regional headquarters is located near the LA Art district downtown with colorful listening rooms, including one where Spotify’s music team can meet with artists to discuss their latest songs while lounging on velvet couches. The new facility features 18 podcast studios, a theater, an indoor stage and soundproof listening areas. Its "Screening Room" features Dolby Atmos Sound. The campus is composed of three buildings: Pod City where all of the LA podcasts are recorded; an office building; and a building that has a stage, indoor theater, cafeteria, and conference room. Spotify also has an echo room and plans to host live concerts from its rooftop. The property is owned by a joint venture of Blatteis & Schnur and ASB Real Estate Investments and known as At Mateo. According to real estate sources, the company signed a 10-year deal for 110,000 square feet in mid-2018 and added another 45,000 square feet the following year. The campus is part of the At Mateo complex on 555 Mateo Street, near the trendy Girl & the Goat restaurant. At Mateo was originally conceived as a retail-heavy complex, but the developers changed plans in 2017. The complex is now mostly office space. The space is also occupied by USC Roski School of Art and Design and Soylent drinks.
The expansion came around the same time Spotify rebranded from a primarily music streaming service to an “audio platform” with a major focus on podcasting.
The company is slated to count more monthly U.S. podcast listeners by the end of the year than Apple Podcasts. Spotify has also launched a live audio chat room service to compete with Clubhouse and announced late last year it would buy audiobook business Findaway to compete with Audible.
Between February and September 2019, the number of podcasts available on the platform more than doubled from 185,000 to 450,000.
Today, Spotify has an estimated 28.2 million monthly U.S. podcast listeners and is estimated to surpass Apple Podcasts by year’s end, according to research firm eMarketer.

BETTERMAKER’S NEW STEREO PASSIVE EQUALIZER DELIVERS PURE ANALOG BEAUTY OF A PASSIVE EQ WITH IMPRESSIVE DIGITAL PLUG-IN CONTROL
|
|
Bettermaker builds boutique signal processors worthy of worship in their own right, but then they level-up their incredible products with convenient, easy-to-use plug-in control and instant recall.
The new Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer replicates that proven formula to bring the famous and deeply-loved sound of the classic passive EQs to modern high-end workflows. No more snapping pictures or relying on misplaced recall sheets to preserve settings. Bettermaker makes recalling settings easy and reliable with unlimited memory via the associated DAW plug-in. Engineers will find the controls on the Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer familiar: low boost or cut at four possible frequencies; high boost at ten possible frequencies with bandwidth control; and high cut at three possible frequencies. Bypass, output gain, and reset round out the controls. But, of course, the real magic of the Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer is its sound, which includes two perfectly matched channels, and comprehensive plug-in control and recall.
“The 100% analog signal path of the new Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer has all the heft and ethereal air of the vintage passive EQs that are so loved by engineers,” said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group, the U.S. distributor of all Bettermaker signal processors. “It’s not a surgical EQ. The Stereo Passive Equalizer shapes the tone of a stereo signal, imbuing it with a richer low end, a more articulate mid-range, and open, airy high end. Importantly, the low end stays smooth – there’s no lumpiness to it, and the high end stays open and clear without any sharpness or brittleness. Everything just sounds more musical and alive coming out the other side. And of course, with Bettermaker, the plug-in control and instant recall makes it easy to build the Stereo Passive Equalizer into a modern studio workflow. Engineers can easily deliver rough mixes to clients and return to precisely the same mix to address their comments. No approximations or detailed record keeping needed!”
A built-in frequency analyzer within the plug-in gives users feedback on the changes they are making and the effects of those changes. Importantly, its built-in curves match the bandwidth and gain of the actual filters themselves. In addition, new functionality allows users to store and trigger thirty-two “snapshots” either manually or via automation. That way, a single command can trigger full sets of parameters from song to song in a mastering session.
The Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer’s impressive specifications include a 7Hz to 30kHz frequency response (-0.5dB) with even tighter tolerance in the 20Hz to 20kHz range. The maximum input level is 24dBu, and the maximum output level is 27dBu. Dynamic range reaches 101dB and the unit imparts very little distortion or crosstalk. Output gain is +/- 8dB. Stereo signal enters and exits the unit via rear XLR jacks. One of its most innovative features is a hybrid analog/digital signal path – the high-pass filter is a modern musical digital implementation, whereas the rest of the signal path is boutique analog.
The Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer is now available and shipping – and is priced at USA MAP $1999
TransAudio Group, founded by industry veteran Brad Lunde, has quickly become the premier U.S. importer/distributor and/or U.S. sales and marketing representative for high-end audio. Introducing The Daking Mic Pre 4T
Soulful Circuitry Meets Proprietary Problem-Solving Features
|
|
Above: Brad Lunde with Geoff Daking
|
Perfect for studio, live, and broadcast audio recording, the Mic-Pre 4T features 4 high end pre-amps in 1U of rack space, Jensen input/output transformers, and has now added variable high pass filters on each channel.
The new Daking Mic Pre 4T is designed for the widest possible range of inputs, from vintage, low-gain ribbons, to high-gain modern condensers, and instruments via the DI. Avoiding clipping and distortion is critical for error-free capture of that once-in-a-lifetime magical performance. Daking’s variable low pass filters make it possible to have a different low-filter setting on each of the four input channels, preventing unwanted over saturation of the transformer. "The Instrument DI passes through the ultra linear Jensen output transformer for one of the best DI’s around. The Daking Mic Pre 4T is the one pre-amp that’s right for many different sources, rather than the costly “different pre-amps for different sources” approach," says Brad Lunde. Watch the YouTube interview with Trans Audio Group's Brad Lunde, where Geoff Daking goes into great detail on the design and features of the new Mic-Pre 4T. Daking Audio gear is built in USA and distributed by TransAudio Group.
Built in the USA, Daking uses only high-end parts like Jensen input and output transformers in a high-end design using all-discrete transistor Class A circuitry. How's that for Soulful circuitry meets proprietary problem-solving features? Order yours today!

King's X Masters at Bernie Grundman
photo: by David Goggin
|
|
American hard rock band King's X (Springfield, Missouri roots) has mastered their new album at Bernie Grundman's with mastering engineer and Pueblo Audio gear designer Scott Sedillo.
The band is known for it's powerful combo of progressive metal, funk and soul with a vocal driving force fueled by gospel, blues, and the resonance of early British Invasion groups.
Their first album in 14 years was produced, engineered and mixed by Michael Parnin at his retro-equipped Blacksound Studios in Pasadena.
"The approach for this record is old school with a retro-70s sound captured by a pure analog signal chain," explains Parnin. "We did analog summing with the Pueblo Audio Sidewinder for the rhythm section and the main mix buss summing. For automation on the vocals and overdubs we used the SSL Sigma."
The album was mastered and lacquers cut for vinyl at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios in Hollywood. Release date is Fall 2022 coinciding with an aggressive tour just getting underway.
Mastering engineer Scott Sedillo added, "Michael's 'in-the-box' work sounded terrific. Nevertheless, he had an instinct that an analog approach would be even more fitting for the band's music. This project was very interesting for me because as a mastering engineer at BGM I usually only work at the very end of the production chain. But as president of Pueblo Audio I was also able to contribute to the other production phases by supplying preamps, DI's and the final summing amp. It was intriguing to experience how Michael's new hybrid mixes succeeded in forming a stronger connection to the band and their music. We were also fortunate that the label supported our request to release the vinyl album on four sides at 45rpm, thus removing any physical restrictions for optimizing the cut."

RIP Naomi Judd
January 11, 1946 – April 30, 2022
|
|
The country music world has lost a music legend with the passing of Naomi Judd who died by suicide at the age 76 near Nashville, Tennessee, just one day before she was to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame along with her daughter Wynonna.
Her daughters, Wynonna and actress Ashley, issued a statement saying they "lost their mom to the disease of mental illness."
Another post said: "We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”
“Her family has asked that we continue with The Judds’ official Hall of Fame induction on Sunday. We will do so, with heavy hearts and weighted minds. Naomi and daughter Wynonna’s music will endure,” said Hall of Fame CEO Kyle Young.
The Judds had recently performed at the Country Music Awards on April 11.
Born Diana Ellen Judd in Ashland, Kentucky, Naomi worked as a single mother and nurse in Nashville, when she and Wynonna started singing together professionally. Their unique harmonies, together with elements of acoustic music, bluegrass and blues, told stories about family, and the virtue of fidelity. Naomi Judd was open about her health struggles, as well as severe depression and anxiety. In her memoir, “River of Time,” she described her full recovery from hepatitis C, which she said she unknowingly contracted during her time as a nurse. In the memoir, she described feeling like she had lost her identity when she returned home after a 2010 reunion tour, isolating herself at her home and dealing with crippling panic attacks. Free Speech Or Partizan Pitch?
Elon Musk's desire to exert influence over a major media platform
is costly. I'm the first to admire self-made-billionaires like Musk and Jeff Bezos. Though, we have to admit, both men have a lot of balls in the air! How will SpaceX's founder manage Twitter?
The platform is used by nearly 400 million people including some of the world’s most influential politicians, celebrities, and public figures. Twitter stock holders and employees are worried about whether Musk’s absolutist approach to free speech will undo the progress Twitter has made in the past several years to reduce the prevalence of harassment, hate speech, and misinformation.
He has made a point of saying that he’s buying Twitter because he cares about Free Speech, not money!
He may have to pay Twitter a hefty $1 billion termination fee (a side show) if he doesn’t go through with his $44 billion acquisition of the social network, per a new SEC filing.
Fortunately User Experience Is Self-Correcting
Perhaps all of us users need to focus on how the new owner will change our relationship with Free Speech and choose to stay or leave, which eventually becomes a stock price issue and self-correcting. After all, it's always up to us consumers to vote for a better user experience. And just like selling cities on Mars to the tune of $10 trillion, the user experience on a toxic platform sucks!
"Success is not guaranteed, but excitement certainly is."

Music of W.A. Mozart Lives After 231 Years
|
|
Makes me wonder... How many heavenly melodies humanity has missed out because of Mozart's short life. His rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works of virtually every genre of his time.
Director Milos Forman's Amadeus received 40 Awards, including eight Oscars, and remains a favorite with movie lovers.
In the film, Mozart's alcoholism deteriorates his health, marriage, and reputation at court, even as he continues to produce brilliant work. One of his contemporary rival, Salieri, a devout Catholic, cannot fathom why God would endow such a great gift to Mozart instead of him and vows to take revenge by destroying Mozart. 231 years later, one search on YouTube and you find 100s of performances in recent years of his music.
Good music lives and offers the kind of art that illustrates the idea of the marriage of Freedom and Necessity --A true testament to Truth and Beauty that triumphs over death itself.
The celebrated British conductor Andrew Manze conducts the Bachchor Salzburg and the Camerata Salzburg in this new realization of Mozart’s Mass in C minor (1785) here

"He must have been a gardener...it's funny how one insect can damage so much grain."
--Elton John
Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny), his song dedicated to John Lennon Song lyrics, Jump Up! (1982)
Elton John's song, Empty Garden, dedicated to John Lennon, comes to mind while the world watches well-loved musician/actor, Johnny Depp's high-profile life unfold in a soap opera-like Virginia court hearings of his $50 million defamation case against ex-wife, actress Amber Heard. How Assistants, managers, agents, attorneys, security guards, nannies, accountants and countless people, hired to support and protect you, become key witnesses to your life. Moral of the story? Simplify life by choosing healthy relationships and surround yourself with good people, personally and professionally.
Now, mental illness and addiction are no joking matters, but the song, Pretty Little One performed by Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers feat. Edie Brickell puts s humorous spin on things, guaranteed to make you smile!
Happy Mother's Day -- Sunday May 8th--everyone!
