A New Album from the BRENT FISCHER ORCHESTRA
A Modern Big Band Interpretation of Pictures At An Exhibition by

Producer/Arranger/Vibes, Brent Fischer. photos by the C
More than a century ago Mussorgsky was inspired by his friend’s art exhibit when he wrote the suite for piano.
Now, Grammy®-winning arranger Brent Fischer adds his 21st century big-band sketch to popularized versions of the classic by Ravel, Emerson Lake & Palmer and Isao Tomita.
Brent Fischer's PICTURES offers reverence for the past, and while rooted in Jazz idiom, it stays genre-less and time-less.
A kind of musical self-portrait, Brent promenades leisurely into the great hall of influences and remains original to the Fischer brand.
PICTURES is the new album featuring the Brent Fischer Orchestra (BFO) with twenty star-studded Los Angeles musicians to include: Larry Koonse on guitar, Jamey Tate on drums, Ken Wild on bass, Quinn Johnson on keyboard. The stunning Fischer woodwind and brass colors are played by Carl Saunders, Ron Stout, Michael Stever, Andy Martin, Scott Whitfield, Francisco Torres, Rob Hardt, Alex Budman and Kristen Edkins.
PICTURES is arranged by Brent Fischer in ten movements and five interludes with approximately forty minutes of vibrant big band music. The Deluxe CD offers three additional bonus tracks, alternative studio takes featuring brilliant solos and sections, plus photographs exhibited from the sessions, rehearsals, and more...
To engage fans, Fischer invites listeners to curate and share their own exhibit of pictures on social media as they listen to the album. “Let your imagination run wild according to how the music moves you,” says Fischer, who has changed the mood in Mussorgsky’s movements with his playful modern spin. Fischer's fresh treatments are reflected in the re-imagined titles to include: Garden (Tuileries) which plays like a lush samba, In Chicks (Ballet), Woody Herman meets Charles Ives. Bazaar (Limoges) showcases Fischer wind choir that includes piccolo, alto flute, and contra bass clarinet. Castles moves like a quick-step waltz.. Then there's, Gateway and LiftOff! -- two movements inspired by NASA’s Gateway project (mission Artemis 2024). "After all, that's why agencies like NASA exist - to help solve problems here on Earth and make our lives better. Smart phones and GPS exist thanks to international efforts in space," says Fischer. The album cover for PICTURES imagines an art exhibit on the moon with pictures from the arranger's travels on planet earth.
“There’s nothing more exciting than hearing this music when you’re playing with Fischer ensembles or conducting the big band. The next best thing is to hear the recording," says Fischer whose PICTURES are rooted in American jazz, inspired by immense beauty in nature, and Brent's other big passion: Science and space exploration.
"Like music, science aims to improve lives and encourages collaboration. There’s something for everyone in this music, young and young at heart,” adds the producer.
PICTURES is produced by Brent Fischer for Clavo Records and recorded at the Village Studios (below with some of the musicians during a session break), with engineer Matt Brownlie.
PICTURES displays a plethora of emotion, from raw and wild to solemn and soulful, and like Kandinsky’s Study, it's colorful and modern. You could say Brent Fischer has built his own work of art.

Interview with The Creators In The Studio

Time of Your Life with Ken Allardyce

Nostalgia is back! When was the last time you celebrated your favorite artist’s new album or single release by shopping the cassette version? According to OCC (The Official Charts Co in UK) over 65,000 cassettes were purchased by the great British music-buying public in the first six months of 2020. Here's a few artists who have joined the craze and enjoying the demand for cassettes. In 2017, according to an annual report from music-industry research company Buzzangle, cassette sales in the U.S. rose 136 percent, even more than vinyl,
And little hissing has nothing on analog nostalgia!
One of the biggest sellers was Billie Eilish, who was born in 2001 when the format was already considered close to obsolete. The cassette of her song When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was produced in lurid UV green and orange, making it both collectible and “Instagram-able”.
The last decade of the twentieth century, before online distribution and marketing took over, is the subject of our interviews called: Quintessential 90s: Music that Lives & Moves.
’90s Nostalgia is alive and well. Some say music was disrupted by technology. Netscape, developer of the first graphical browser for the World Wide Web, went public on August 9, 1995. The stock boom continued in 1999, with a particular frenzy developing around Internet startups.
Fact: Technology always moves faster than culture. It’s 2021. We still hear the music of 90s in restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, hospitals, sports venues and on our personal playlists. Labels are beginning to see profits again. The biggest record label out there, Universal Music Group, which was bought by French conglomerate Vivendi for $32 billion in 2000, before the CD market crashed, is now speculated to be worth up to $50 billion. But, are labels sharing their good fortune with the creators, the artists? Well, you could say some things don't change.
90s is also characterized by cross-pollination of sounds that has left a boundary-breaking legacy and still relevant today. “This watershed event in 90s music even primed the genre for the absolute dominance that we see today: a hip hop-led soundscape that’s a mash-up of rock, EDM, pop and R&B.
Today's superstars are competing with comedians on YouTube and pranksters on TikTok who command tens of millions of views with a single post. YouTube is dominating Gen Z and Millennials’ music consumption source. According to YPulse’s data, half of these consumers get music from YouTube. Sadly, the creators are barely receiving 4-10% revenue from it.
Ask yourself? Would your 10-year-old feel deprived if you take away his/her iTune playlist or game of Fornite or apps like Instagram and Snapchat? Well, you know the answer.

A Trademark Win For Auratone
Celebrating 60-years of Industry Support
|
|
Above: President of Auratone Alex Jacobsen
Below: Elmhirst with his Auratone and ATC monitoring setup at Electric Lady, NY
|
Founded in 1958 by Jack Wilson, Auratone has been family owned for over 60 years. Most of us are familiar with the little cube speakers on the console of most recording studios.
The Auratones have become a studio standard thanks to numerous producers and engineers from Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson's Thriller) to Tom Elmhirst (mixed Adele's 25 (sold over 20 million copies).
Now founder Jack Wilson’s grandson, Alex Jacobsen is pleased to announces that thanks to music community support, Auratone has won a long court battle regarding its trademark rights. Jacoben who is now the president of the company worked with his mother and aunt before he took over the Auratone family business, after graduating from college in 2012. That business included the original company inventory, from drills to artwork to test equipment. Back in 2014, Behringer parent company, Music Tribe registered the AURATONE trademark as its own! Auratone filed a protest same year on June 11 with the US Patent and Trademark Office along with its own trademark application that shows when the business started in December 22,1959.
Very few lawsuits make it to a final judgment, and the cards are almost always stacked against a small business. "Without you this wouldn’t have been possible, and now the next generation of audio engineers will be able to continue producing hits on Auratone speakers for years to come,” says President of the company, Alex Jacobsen.
Auratone is distributed in the U.S. by TransAudio Group. "The matter escalated in 2018 when Music Tribe began selling the Auratone branded C5A and C50A without parent company's consent. After a seven-year battle, Aurotone have finally defeated a goliath, as the U.S. District Court has ruled that it has sole rights to use the Auratone name and granted an injunction against Music Tribe, " says Brad Lunde, President of Trans Audio Group. "We have also had other judgments in our favor in Europe at the EUIPO and Board of Appeal, where they revoked Music Tribe’s Auratone trademark registration," adds, Jacobsen.
“Auratone has been a family business for over sixty years. We continue to operate as the way my late grandfather Jack Wilson (below), the founder of Auratone, would have wanted it. To everyone who has supported us, thank you for helping keep the Auratone dream alive and protecting a part of history," says Jacobsen.

"ATC monitors are something you have to experience to really grasp how different they are from everything else. Lets just say that you can hear details you’ve never heard before, leading you to faster, more accurate decisions in your creative process," says Brad Lunde, President of Trans Audio Group.
The models range from $5,000 to $50,000 per pair and all share a very similar sound. For larger rooms and midfield, applications check out the SEM45 with dual 6.5-inch drivers and the fantastic SEM150 with a 15-inch woofer and 350 Watts of power. The founder and CEO of Sweetwater announced that he is “stepping up” from his role. In a letter to employees, Chuck Surack announced that he is transitioning from his role as CEO and into the role of Chairman of the Sweetwater Board.

When in NY, I get myself a latte and walk to Saks Fifth Avenue window to see what's new in fashion.
Gucci celebrates an epic milestone this year: 100 years of being one of the world’s premier fashion labels. In the ’80s it became the go-to brand for musicians, especially American rappers. Dapper Dan of Harlem famously pirated Gucci during that decade, setting in motion a street wear craze for the GG logo and making it synonymous with palpably cool street style. Now Billie Eilish has full sponsorship from the elite fashion brand.
Last year Gucci celebrated Micky Mouse's 90th birthday in collaboration with Disney with a drop of two 3-D printed bags! This year, it's the Gucci 100 bamboo medium bag (above at NY's Saks window), both retail for $4,500.
Suddenly buying an album at $10-30 feels like a good deed. Music moves products, but, above all, it moves us. Treat yourself to good music this month and ask yourself. What's my brand?!
