Alisal School District: Sustainable Schools

Alisal School District and Salinas Valley Recycles have been in close partnership for many years to bring sustainability into schools. Meet Irene Vargas, Director of Nutrition Services, in our recent video to learn how our partnership has fostered sustainability and compliance with SB1383. They've taken compliance a step further by incorporating eco-friendly (and cost-saving) swaps, like reusable mealtime trays! We commend Alisal's dedication to creating green schools and a bright future for the next generations!

This video was debuted at the California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA) Conference during our presentation called The Art of Implementation: Building Strong Foundations for Sustainable Solutions.

CRRA, That's A Wrap!

We were honored to be a regional host and to be selected in three presentations during the California Resource Recovery Association Conference, held in our very own backyard of Monterey! We discussed the art of implementation at schools (with the video of our partnership with Alisal School District featured in the article above), our involvement in SCRAP - School Composting and Recycling Advocates Program, and our successful multiagency collaborative approach to navigating SB1383!

We enjoyed the chance to network, see familiar faces, and engage in inspiring presentations from our partners and industry friends across the state. We're looking forward to the updates from groundbreaking new recycling laws and creating a sustainable future for all!

Youth Council 2025/2026

After completing the three-day summer intensive program, we're excited to announce this year's Youth Council cohort of Salinas Valley Recycles!

We showed the Youth Council behind the curtain of "away" to where trash actually ends up, plus the Material Recovery Facilities at Ryan Ranch and ReGen Monterey. They had a great opportunity during our "Meet Our Partners" lunch to hear from our industry partners about what they do and how we all work collaboratively to create an essential service to our community.

Welcome to our Youth Council - Amanda Del Rosario, Sarah Billman, Julian Brandt, Steven Brandt, Jenny De La Cruz Robles, Hestor He, Juliette Loder, Marily Martinez, Julian Paniagua, Rosa Perez, Jaena Serrano, Lucille Uhl, and Reuben Zamora!

Compost Workshops & Giveaways!

Join us! We're hosting two more compost workshops and compost giveaways this season that you won't want to miss.

You'll have two upcoming opportunities in Salinas to take advantage of free compost (made from your yard & food waste!) and a chance to learn how to make compost at home with scraps you may already have lying around!

Register today so we know you can make it, and we prepare enough materials for everyone.
