FY2022 Individual Artist Fellowship
Application Open
The Fiscal Year 2022 Individual Artist Fellowship application is open through smARTDE with applications due on Monday, August 2, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. EST. In response to feedback from the strategic plan, we have added a new artistic discipline – Music: Contemporary Performance for hip hop, popular, and R&B artists. Classical musicians can continue to apply in the Music: Solo Recital discipline.
Masters applications will be accepted in Literary and Media Arts from artists who have received an Established Fellowship prior to January 2015 in the same discipline.

I recently joined in a Zoom session with representatives from arts organizations around the state talking about the challenges of re-opening in a post-COVID world. A few themes became apparent very quickly. All are eager to get back to full-time live programming. All are adjusting their plans on a regular basis as restrictions loosen and more people get vaccinated. All have learned a lot about program delivery, their patrons, and the joy that comes from interacting with audiences. Most importantly, all are focused intently on bringing audiences back to an environment that is safe, engaging, and rewarding.
The summer affords many of Delaware’s presenters the chance to provide rich experiences outdoors while they work out the logistics of indoor programming. Some have already crossed those waters in responsible and creative ways. In all cases, it’s not just audiences who are yearning to experience live arts, it’s the artists and organizations as well.
I am often asked “what can I do to support artists and arts organizations? My reply is always the same: continue to support the arts with your contributions, follow your favorite artists and organizations and participate in any way that you can, and finally, help to make re-opening safe and comfortable for everyone.
Across the country, the success of vaccination campaigns has allowed businesses to confidently re-open and elected officials to relax restrictions. The more of us who are vaccinated and continue to follow the recommended COVID guidelines, the sooner we will reach the time when all venues can open to full capacity and all patrons can feel comfortable going to their favorite theater, performance hall, or museum. Please join with me in “bringing the arts to life.”

Skiff
by Howard J. Eberle
Skiff, 2016, transparent watercolor, 11" x 30"
The Journey, an exhibition of watercolor paintings by Howard J. Eberle, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from June 4-25, 2021. Eberle is the recipient of a 2021 Artist Fellowship in Painting from the Delaware Division of the Arts.
The majority of works in this exhibition span his journey of the last decade of a professional career that has lasted over 25 years. Included are award-winning paintings that have been exhibited in public museums in the U.S. and abroad.
Eberle describes himself as a portrait painter of objects. He is drawn to the peeled paint of an old barn, the rusty patina of an anchor, or the weathered wood on an old workboat. He carefully balances his compositions and eliminates some details that might distract the eye.
Eberle explains, “I am greatly influenced by the Zen principal of kanso, and in my paintings keep only what is necessary to allow more space for quiet moments of contemplation. Through composition I strive to eliminate clutter in favor of simplicity.”
The paintings are transparent watercolor using a drybrush technique which enables him to achieve realistic, fine detail not typical of this medium. Learn more with the Meet the Artist video.
The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington. Visitors must wear face coverings and maintain 3 feet distance from other individuals not in their household.
