June 2025 NEWSLETTER

Dear CDOC Community,

June is Pride Month, a time for celebration, reflection, and future planning. Where healthcare access and treatment equity are concerned, there remains much work to do. True pride means continuing our work to ensure that every LGBTQ+ person can access care without fear, receive treatment without bias, and thrive in a system that sees and respects their full identity. The National LGBT Cancer Network provides access to a number of trainings and resources aimed to reduce cancer risk and improve the lives of cancer survivors in the LGBTQ+ community.

June is also Cancer Survivorship Awareness Month. Survivors include anyone ever diagnosed with cancer, from the time of diagnosis until the end of life. Over two million new cases expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. this year alone. As of January 1, 2025, there were18.6 million cancer survivors in U.S.; this number is projected to exceed 22 million by 2035 (ACS, Cancer Facts & Figures 2025). With continuing scientific advancement and improved treatments, the survivorship community will continue to grow. The American Cancer Society provides a range of resources to support survivors and their families during and after treatment.

Next month, CDOC will be launching Partner in Focus. Each quarter, CDOC will highlight one of our dedicated coalition members to foster connection, collaboration, and inspiration across the CDOC community via the listserv and on the CDOC website. These highlights aim to showcase the unique roles and voices that strengthen our collective work in cancer prevention and control.

CDOC hosted the CDOC Orientation Webinar on May 19th. The webinar was an opportunity for current, new and prospective CDOC members to become more connected with the coalition by learning essential information about CDOC’s structure, focus areas, and activities. Recording available here.

Lastly, The CDOC Evaluation Webinar was held on Thursday, June 5th.The session highlighted findings from the California Comprehensive Cancer Program (CCCP) 2023- 2024 Evaluation Report Findings at a Glance and provided insights into how the CDOC coalition tracks progress and strengthens cancer control efforts across California. Webinar participants were able to learn how evaluation supports planning, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the Comp Cancer Program and CDOC. We invite those who were unable to attend to listen to the recording. Please be on the lookout for the CDOC Annual All Members Survey 2025 coming out later this month.

May 2025 Cancer Plan Corner Highlight

Chapter 9: Treatment & Survivorship

Chapter Highlight: Survivorship

A cancer survivor is considered a survivor from the time of diagnosis until the end of life (NIH, 2025). With nearly 17 million people with a history of cancer in the United States and a little over 1.9 million new cases expected to be diagnosed in 2022, cancer continues to affect almost every American, whether through a close friend or family member, or through their own experiences (ACS, 2022).

Please visit the CDOC website to read more on the cancer plan's treatment and survivorship strategies and objectives for California. You may also access the chapter here.

American Cancer Society Introduces CancerRisk360

To help improve cancer prevention and risk reduction, the American Cancer Society developed ACS CancerRisk360. This interactive online tool provides individuals a personalized, comprehensive assessment of cancer risk along with resources to empower and enable them to help reduce their risk of cancer through healthy lifestyles, regular cancer screening, and genetic counseling and testing direction.

CancerRisk360 provides individuals with an accessible, easy first step to prevent and detect cancer by offering a better understanding of several factors that impact a person’s individual risk. Through the free 5-10-minute CancerRisk360 assessment, individuals answer questions in four key areas:

  • Genetic and hereditary markers
  • Family history of cancer
  • Adherence to evidence-based cancer screening guidelines
  • Daily life factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, and body weight

Visit acscancerrisk360.cancer.org to take the assessment and learn more about what you can change to improve your health and lower your cancer risk today! Please share with your networks.
