Upcoming Safe Sport Updates

Passing along the notification we received from the Center for SafeSport:

We have been working on updates to our online courses based on your feedback, including a shorter Core. We are excited that the following courses will be updated on Wednesday, March 26, 2025:

  • SafeSport® Trained Core
  • Refresher 1, 2, and 3
  • Parent’s Guide to Misconduct in Sport
  • SafeSport® for Youth Athletes (Ages 13-17)
  • SafeSport® for Kids

Learners who are in progress on any of these courses need to complete them by Tuesday, March 25 to avoid having progress reset and having to restart from the beginning. Please complete any in-progress courses ASAP and plan your training schedule accordingly.

All updated courses will include new content reflecting the 2024 SafeSport Code and 2025 MAAPP, as well as technical fixes to correct minor bugs. The SafeSport® Trained Core and Refresher courses also include several updates to improve the learning experience (e.g., fewer videos, easier to read). The course for Parents has been updated to improve accessibility for learners with disabilities. The courses for Youth Athletes and Kids will now be available in English, Spanish, and French.

The updates will not change the status of course completions prior to March 25.

Notes From The Sanction Manager

2025 Outstanding

Service Award

Each year Local Swimming Committees have the opportunity to select a recipient for the Outstanding Service Award. This award, is presented to a volunteer in each LSC in recognition of service to swimming. Recipients of the Outstanding Service Award are selected by the LSC and receive the award and an Outstanding Service Award pin.

Wisconsin Swimming is now accepting nominations for this year’s Outstanding Service Award recipient and invites the submission of nominations from its membership.

In recognizing the importance of volunteer work, United States Swimming takes great pride in honoring the role of the volunteer as an important investment in the future of all swimming athletes and the growth of the programs they represent.

Clearly, volunteers like Jack Pettinger (1996), Bruce Maas (1997), Chuck Runge(1998), Dale Nickels (1999), Jim Mohr and Mary Schneider (2000), Drew Walden (2001), Patricia Kramer (2002), Mary Schneider (2003), Brian Sanders (2004), Susan Zblewski (2005), Brian Hancy (2006), Dave Clark (2007), Deb Nickels (2008), George Geanon (2009), Pat Lewno and Joan Domitrz (2010), Jeanne Drzewiecki (2011), Luke Schumm (2012), Rick Potter (2013), Nancy Roos (2014), Angela Monty (2015), Laura Becherer (2016), Sarah Larson (2017), Mark and Pam VanHout (2018), John Carabelli (2019), Cyndy Raatz (2020), Michael White (2021) , Van Donkersgoed (2022), Michael Harbert (2023), and Bruce Romberg (2024) previous Outstanding Service Award recipients, are critical to the success of United States Swimming in Wisconsin.

The Outstanding Service Award was established in 1981 to recognize the invaluable contribution of volunteer service to United States Swimming. The Award is presented annually to an honoree named by each of the 60 Local Swim Committees. Selection criteria consider quality, level and years of volunteer service in elected or appointed positions from among the categories of administrator, official, and coach.

This is your chance to help recognize someone you know for his or her sacrifice and commitment to the sport of swimming by nominating him/her for this prestigious award. All nominations must be in writing and include a description of the nominee’s service. No phone nominations will be accepted.

Nominations received by April 4, 2025, will be voted on at the WI Swimming Annual Meeting on April 26 and presented at the April 26, 2025 WI Swimming Awards Banquet.

2024-2025 Breakout Swimmer of the Year

Wisconsin Swimming has presented a special award called Short Course Breakout Swimmer of the Year. This year we will again honor a swimmer of each gender with the Short Course Breakout Swimmer of the Year. Swimmers eligible for the award must be aged between 15-18 years of age. They are nominated by their athlete peers or WI Swimming coaches that have taken notice. This award has the spirit to target athletes that have made large steps and found success later in their relative swimming life. Think of individuals that have shown great improvement during this short course season. Some credentials to consider may be first-time State or National meet qualifiers after swimming several seasons before reaching such a benchmark. Those nominations are not limited to the examples provided as they are just food for thought.

DEADLINE: Monday, March 31st, 2025
