Summer 2016
The Yarmouth Port Library will be 150 years old soon.
|
To celebrate the 150
th birthday of the Yarmouth Port Library, we will
hold a party beginning at 2 pm on Saturday June 18 for our members,
their guests and families, and other loyal library users. We will have a
birthday cake with ice cream and punch, plus other refreshments.
Children are invited to enjoy some games appropriate to the era of the library's founding, and we will have live guitar music and guides in period costumes.
There is no charge for this event but donations will be welcome.
Library patrons who wish to attend should sign up at the
circulation desk to help us know how many guests to plan for.
The celebration will be outside behind the library so parking
may be tight.
The public lot behind the fire house will be
available and possibly the lot at the Colonial House Inn.

Late 19th century view of the Yarmouth Port Library |
The Yarmouth Port Library turns 150 this June but, it wasn't the first library inYarmouth Port.
The first formal library on Cape Cod was in Yarmouth organized on March 16
th
, 1807 at Elisha Doane's tavern, a building still standing on the NW corner of Route 6A and Playground Avenue. That library was
disbanded in 1817.
Nearly 40 years later libraries again surfaced. The first on Cape Cod was the Brewster Ladies Library in 1853, followed by the Hyannis Public Library in 1865. The Yarmouth Port Library was organized a year later, and Sturgis Library in 1867. By 1880, there were 15 libraries on Cape Cod, and this number grew to 31 by 1900.

Marcus the Magician. |
We have some fun things planned for the summer months. Marcus the Magician will be here again for one of his fantastic shows on Friday, July 29th at 3 PM. Please, sign up in advance as we were totally sold out last year.
The Cape Cod Therapy Dogs will be joining us on July 8th and August 5th. These sweet, loveable animals just love to be read to. Even if you're not very good at reading yet, they are happy to sit with you and look at the pictures. Anyone interested in knowing more about these dogs and what they do is welcome but an appointment is needed if you want one-on-one time with a dog.
In addition, Wednesdays, beginning July 6
th
through August 17
th
from 2 to 6 PM we will be hosting Lego Freeplay. Come in and make something! If you are younger than 8, you need to bring an adult.
Looking forward to seeing you all (Oh, and to some warm weather, too.)

| 2016 Membership Campaign Lags |
|
Les Peat
First, our heartfelt thanks to all of those who supported the 2016 Membership Campaign.
Despite somewhat soft returns this year, this continues to be an extremely important source of operating funds.
Technically, the Campaign doesn't end until June 30th, but if history is any guide, nearly all of the proceeds are in, and the total stands at $37,800 -- well short of our goal of $40,000. Fortunately, the shortfall coincided with another shortfall that resulted in record low expenses in the snow removal budget, and this offset the poor fundraising results.
There are a number of possible explanations for our failure to meet the goal. For one thing, we lost a number of very generous donors this year (most of them moved away from Yarmouth Port) and no one stepped up to replace them in the higher gift categories. More disturbing was the fact that so many mid-range members failed to continue their support at 2015 levels. This may be attributable in part to stock market conditions, which were, and continue to be, volatile, to say the least. Unfortunately, while this may have had a negative effect on membership support, it also limits our ability to draw on our endowment for operations.
On the positive side, we continue to draw a healthy number of new members, who may in time become major supporters of the Library. And if only a modest number of renewing members return to their former giving levels, we should once again be able to rely on the membership campaign for over 25% of our operating revenue. We can only hope that this will be the case.
