Thursday, April 2, 5:00 PM
Art & Soul, 1323 State St.
"PENTIMENTO: Layered Meanings Brought to Life" is a solo exhibition by Santa Barbara artist Michael Vilkin, who explores the concept of pentimento—the reappearance of earlier layers in a painting as time reveals what was once hidden. Here it becomes a metaphor for human experience: identity, memory, and meaning existing in layers that shift, fade, and resurface. In his figurative paintings, subtle details—expressions, gestures, shadows, and clothing—hint at inner narratives beneath outward appearances.

Head south and liberate Santa Barbara and then Los Angeles from the forces of General José María Flores and claim California for the United States. To do so, for the next twenty-five days Frémont and his men would embark on a historic march of 230 miles culminating in a Christmas Day descent from the Santa Ynez Mountains in a torrential rainstorm. Clean and Safe Program
Our Clean & Safe Program continues to make a visible impact downtown. Our team is out daily, keeping the streets clean, welcoming, and well-maintained, to help create clearly defined, comfortable, and safe spaces for the community. During February, the team covered 1,873 miles on foot and filled 1,539 trash bags, removing 26,163 pounds of debris from the district. They also pressure washed 95 block faces, including trash cans and light poles. These efforts not only improve the appearance of our public spaces but also enhance overall safety and the experience for everyone who visits, works, or lives downtown.

State Street Flag Program
SB Bowl flags will be flying on State Street from 03/25 - 04/07.
Built in 1936 with federal funds from the Works Progress Administration, the Santa Barbara Bowl was created to house the annual pageant for the Old Spanish Days Celebration. As legend has it, the natural canyon and pristine views of this area were considered when deciding on the ideal venue. This community treasure had a brief golden era in the 1970s, as concert touring started developing. Local artists discovered this gem, and the community enjoyed sunny afternoons with music. Acts like Jackson Browne, Jerry Garcia, The Doobie Brothers, James Taylor, and more made the burgeoning industry take notice of Santa Barbara.
