NCCEP National Conference

July 21-24

It won't belong and many of us will be heading to the NCCEP National Conference in Washington, DC! NCCEP always brings in amazing keynote speakers and has a large number of breakout session as well as vendors that can help your program with many different areas of services. If possible, be sure to support Jana Burd, Jairon Castellanos-Boteo, and Janet Stake as they are presenting sessions during the conference!! Registration is open! We'll see you there!

Safe travels to everyone heading to DC next week!! Enjoy the conference! Don't forget to take some photos and post to social media!

SSA Summer Bridge

Happening NOW!! The new Summer Bridge program with SSA is occurring as this newsletter is being queued up to reach your inbox! The program was opened up to both juniors and seniors to increase participation. NSHE's Jana Burd will be traveling with the students to Prescott, AZ for this event! She will be joined by former GEAR UP FYCA, Andrea Saavedra! Stay tuned for a recap of the event next month!

UNLV Summer STEM Camp!

For the third year, we have been able to provide GEAR UP students with the opportunity to attend the UNLV Summer STEM Camp! Part of our regular practice is to also include a GEAR UP specific component. This year we are also welcoming back four advisors from various UNLV colleges to introduce their STEM related majors and corresponding potential STEM careers. Students have always enjoyed and appreciated these presentations. This year we have Sara Betts from the School of Integrated Health Sciences, Rachel DeVera from the College of Engineering, Kevin McVay from the College of Sciences, and Ashley Stone from the College of Fine Arts. Both Kevin and Ashley have presented for us each year! Thank you all! Special thanks to ASPIRE's Annie Savage for being on hand to introduce our presenters. Thank you so much, Annie!!

More STEM News!

With our fall and spring terms being very busy, summer is often a time to be able to innovate and work on new ideas. Our STEM Committee has been hard at work trying to develop a more comprehensive structure for our STEM efforts and activities. One idea that just might help us to reach more students and make them aware of the various STEM careers and opportunities that are available to them, is a STEM-specific newsletter. This idea is still in the planning stages but the committee is hoping it will work out and increase our reach in sharing STEM education and career information. We are hoping to have some time in the upcoming training to discuss it further.

Congratulations Nicole and Rebecca!

GEAR UP ASPIRE Director Nicole Stella and her wife, Dr. Rebecca Gates, tied the knot on June 27, 2024 at Liss Ard Estate in County Cork, Ireland. The wedding weekend turned out beautifully, though it rained throughout (apparently that's good luck!). Nicole & Rebecca spent their honeymoon traveling in Ireland and England.
