Summer has arrived, whether we're ready for it or not. Along with the heat comes the close of another fiscal year, and I'm reminded of just how much has happened in a relatively short time. We continue to provide services and supports to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and we're still enjoying the opportunity to celebrate Alta Mira's 40th anniversary. Four decades is no small milestone, and it's worth pausing to appreciate everyone who has helped make it possible.
The legislative session wrapped up in March. As always, Alta Mira stayed engaged in discussions surrounding legislation that could affect the people and families we serve. Looking ahead, the political landscape is about to shift considerably. Every seat in the New Mexico House will be on the ballot this year, and when the Legislature reconvenes next session, it will do so under a new governor. It is still an important time to talk to your legislators and prepare to vote on November 3rd!
Spring was especially busy for our Early Intervention team. In April, staff gathered for their annual training week, which blended professional development with a healthy dose of team connection. Topics ranged from NICU follow-up clinics and mealtime routines to prenatal exposures and parenting education. They also spent time strengthening their relationships through a scavenger hunt that brought out everyone's competitive spirit.
We were also able to send three of our Family Supports Services Registered Nurses to the Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association (DDNA) Annual Education Conference in Phoenix. This opportunity allowed our nurses to connect with colleagues from across the country, exchange ideas, and bring back innovative practices that benefit the individuals we support every day. As an unexpected bonus, they returned home as the proud recipients of a SideLyer bed giveaway!
Speaking of new ideas, you may have heard about our first-ever No Go Gala. This creative fundraiser was developed by our Marketing and Communications Director and has quickly become one of my favorite concepts. The premise is simple: no formal event, no venue, no searching for a babysitter. Instead, supporters donate and spend the evening doing literally anything else. It's fundraising without the fundraiser. Most importantly, it allows more of every dollar to go directly toward the services and supports that matter most. We'd love to hear what you're doing instead of attending a formal event, while still supporting Alta Mira.
Finally, I want to recognize two remarkable individuals whose board service comes to an end on June 30th. Kerry de Vore and Renea Calhoon will conclude their service on our Board of Directors after six years of leadership and unwavering commitment to our mission. Both generously stepped into the role of Board President during their tenure, guiding the organization through challenges and successes alike. While we will certainly miss seeing them around the board table, I have no doubt they will remain valued members of the Alta Mira family.
Kerry and Renea, thank you for your years of service, your leadership, and your belief in what we do. Alta Mira is stronger because of you, and I am grateful for everything you've given to this organization—and to me personally.
As always, thank you for your partnership and support. Together, we continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals and families we serve. Wishing you a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer.
With gratitude,
Angelique Tafoya
