Why do so many Greeks share the same names?
Traditionally, Greek children were named after saints or grandparents not after what was popular at the time. That’s why names like Giorgos, Maria, Dimitris, Eleni, Kostas, and Panagiotis appear again and again across generations. But this repetition is more than tradition.
It can also be a family history clue. A repeated name may point to a grandparent, a patron saint, a village church, or a naming pattern that helps connect one generation to the next.
In Greek genealogy, even a first name can lead you somewhere.
