Are you still looking for inspiration for this year’s ArtFarm call? I have the perfect farm for you! Join us in West Sacramento on Old River Road for ~400 acres of active agriculture at the Yeung Farm.
Our hosts this month are Melissa and Rebecca Yeung, third generation farmers in Yolo County. Their grandfather, Joe Yeung immigrated to California from China in the late 1940s. He initially joined his father in the restaurant business, but quickly discovered that was not his path. He chose to try his hand in agriculture and became a farm laborer in the pear orchards outside Sacramento. Soon after, he was drafted and served in the Korean War. While overseas he met and married his wife, Stella, and they returned to Yolo County in 1955. Joe knew he wanted to continue in the farming business and began his lifetime commitment to the industry.
Joe started out by trading labor in return for ground to farm. With hard work and determination, he built upon those relationships and created a life for himself and young family. He secured more leases and eventually was able to purchase his own ground. Joe operated the farm until the 1970’s when it was passed to his sons.
Becky and Melissa’s farming journey began as kids on the Home Farm, where they had a fruit stand and started a pumpkin patch. They have been running the operation since 2013 and grow a variety of row crops and have a small walnut orchard. Today, Joe Yeung Farms is a 3rd generation diversified farming operation dedicated to continuing the legacy Joe started. Though there are ever increasing challenges in the agriculture industry, we have learned to adjust and keep moving forward.
Melissa recommends exploring along the levy road for an above the crops view. Beckys says the view from the corner of farm along the tree line looking toward the fields or orchard is her favorite. Let me know what your favorite is!
See you on the farm!
