| | State-of-the-Art High-Frequency Communication Technology | This article presents an overview of state-of-the-art HF technology with software-defined radios as their core for direct, anytime, anywhere-to-anywhere-on-Earth connectivity without other communication infrastructure in between. Modern physical and link-layer protocols provide for automatic link establishment, link maintenance, channel selection and radio control. Extensions of these protocols provide robustness for low signal-to-noise conditions, mechanisms to enhance latency and throughput performance, and optimization approaches for a variety of modulation schemes. High efficiency transmitter designs potentially reduce DC input power requirements by factors of 2 or even 3. Split-site stations physically separate the transmitter and receiver to improve antenna decoupling. Future development includes generic IP infrastructure connectivity. | | | |
| | A Concurrent Dual-Band Low-Noise Amplifier With Active Feedback and Self-Biasing for WLAN | This letter presents an asymmetric CDB-LNA designed for WLAN applications requiring different bandwidths: a 2.4GHz narrowband and a 5.1–7.1GHz broadband. Based on a cascode core with a self-biasing technique for single-supply operation, the design employs a gate–source connected lightly doped feedback transistor instead of a traditional resistor in the resistor-inductor-capacitor feedback to achieve a better NF. Dual-band matching networks are utilized for both noise and gain. Fabricated in a 0.15μm D-Mode GaAs pHEMT process, the measured results show that across the bands, the amplifier achieves NFs of 1.4/1.4dB, gains of 14.3/13.9 dB, and input/output return losses better than −17.2/−14.1dB, respectively. The chip area, including pads, is 1200×580μm2. | | | | MTT-S News and Announcements | | |

Ten Years On: IEEE MTT-S Chengdu Chapter
Keeps Weigan Lin’s Legacy Alive
| | |
A new generation of Chinese microwave engineers is growing up both in the shadow and in the light of Prof. Weigan Lin. The year 2025 marked the 10th anniversary of Lin’s passing. To celebrate his life, the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) Chengdu Chapter has mounted a yearlong program that links remembrance with prospective education and outreach.
On Lin’s 93rd birthday, 19 October 2012, former students and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) Alumni Association endowed the Weigan Lin Education Development Fund. The fund underwrites China Microwave Week, the country’s largest annual microwave conference, and sponsors the Weigan Lin Outstanding Paper Award. To date, 13 young researchers have received the conference’s top honor: the Weigan Lin Education Development Fund Outstanding Paper Award. The fund has become a national benchmark for recognizing student excellence.

| | Concurrent Dual-Wideband Load-Modulated Balanced Power Amplifier Covering 0.6-1 and 1.8-2.7 GHz | This article presents a dual-wideband load-modulated balanced amplifier architecture that operates efficiently over two widely separated frequency bands while enabling dynamic power sharing and independent band operation for reduced idling power. The proposed architecture employs two band-specific main amplifiers together with a wideband balanced auxiliary amplifier shared across both bands, providing directional power combining and compatibility with unsynchronized time-division duplex operation. A prototype covering 0.6–1 and 1.8–2.7 GHz has been implemented and experimentally characterized, achieving peak output powers of 47.8 and 47.4dBm , with drain efficiencies of 50%–60% and 38%–48% at 8.5dB output back-off for the low-and high-frequency bands, respectively. | | | |
| | Three-Mode MHz Wireless Power Transfer: Inductive, Capacitive, and Hybrid, with A Unified Coupling Architecture | This paper aims to investigate the deeper wireless power transfer (WPT) mechanism and possibility in the megahertz range: a WPT system with the capability of mode switching among inductive, capacitive, and hybrid power transfer (IPT, CPT, and HPT) with a unified coupling architecture. The proposed transmitter and/or receiver consists of a pair of separate concentric planar spiral coils printed on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) circuit board, and coupling capacitances are formed when T× and R× are aligned, providing a path for CPT. In the meantime, the mutual inductance between the T× and R× coils provides the channel for IPT. The externally used capacitors connecting the concentric coil pairs of T× and R× determine the coupler’s working modes: IPT, CPT, and HPT. Detailed theoretical analysis and system design are provided, and 600W IPT, 400W CPT, and 400W HPT systems are implemented based on the proposed coupler structure with a diameter of 310mm. | | | | |
The 2026 IEEE International MTT Symposia (IMS2026) will convene 7-12 June 2026 at the Thomas M. Menino Convention and Exhibition Center (MCEC) in Boston, bringing together the global RF and microwave community under a newly structured technical program designed to better address RF systems, as well as emerging RF applications, technologies, and techniques.
IMS has formally reorganized its technical content across three coordinated symposia, each focused on a distinct stage of RF and microwave development:
IEEE MTT-S RF Integrated Circuits (RFIC) Symposium: The premier forum dedicated to presenting the latest advances in RF, millimeter-wave, and THz integrated circuits and systems. RFIC 2026 continues to cover a broad spectrum of topics ranging from individual circuit blocks to fully integrated systems operating from sub-GHz to THz frequencies.
IEEE MTT-S RF Systems & Applications (RFSA) Symposium: RF system architectures focusing innovation on integrating components and subsystems to achieve application goals within constraints of available signal-processing techniques and digital processing hardware, including novel applications contexts in communication and sensing. RFSA 2026 will have a special emphasis on integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), a key part of 6G communications. As part of RFSA, there will be a new RF Systems Dialogue which, this year, will focus on ISAC. The format will include a session of invited talks as well as an evening panel session.
IEEE MTT-S RF Technology & Techniques (RFTT) Symposium: Advanced technology and techniques covering emerging RF and microwave research and development directions, and spanning RF passive components, packaging, active devices, discrete RF circuits, computer-aided design, and computational EM. RFTT 2026 will have a special emphasis on RF quantum technology.
The Early Bird Registration deadline is 8 May 2026, don't miss your chance to take advantage of the best rates available.
