"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader." — John Quincy Adams

Dear Friend of Public Education,

Leadership for our schools comes from many places, and it works best when each role is clear and aligned with the district's vision and strategic plans.

Principals set high expectations within their schools and lead collaboratively with teachers, school leadership teams, families, and school improvement councils.

The Superintendent, as the chief educational leader, ensures that schools have strong research-based curriculum and instruction, resources and facilities for teaching and learning, effective student services, and high-quality professional learning communities.

The School Board's role is different, but significant. We provide governance, oversight, and accountability for all schools. We set the vision, establish priorities, hire the superintendent, provide financial support, and ensure that policies and decisions are made in the best interest of all students. The board's role is not to manage day-to-day operations, but to create the conditions for student success in every school.

Impactful school leadership means:

  • Having consistently high expectations for students and teachers.
  • Focusing on improving teaching and learning through a strong and innovative curriculum, professional development, and adequate resources to ensure students’ academic and career success.
  • Supporting school leadership teams and school improvement councils that value high-quality education and innovate for continuous improvement.
  • Building respectful, trusting relationships with students and staff, communicating clearly, listening for creative solutions, maintaining open-door policies, and establishing effective organizational practices.
  • Being visible and accessible throughout the school and its community.
