The Shelter Connection (TSC) is seeking a new Director of Training.
TSC is a volunteer organization working in conjunction with the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter to improve the quality of life of the shelter dogs. It is a volunteer position and a Board of Directors position. After nearly 25 years, it is time for our current Director to retire.
Responsibilities:
Teach volunteers to train the shelter dogs in basic obedience and enrichment exercises, including scent work in accordance with NACSW and Agility, using target training.
Give lectures and demonstrations to the volunteers and the public.
Write lesson plans as needed.
Develop new training programs.
Coordinate with the shelter staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers.
Qualifications:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed.
Ability to easily read canine body language and articulate that during teaching
and lecturing.
Be able to use a variety of training techniques to suit the situation.
Be a proponent of crate training.
Must be open to the use of a WIDE variety of all training equipment tailored to each dog's needs. Included equipment and techniques are; harnesses, no pull harnesses, prong collars (both metal and plastic), e-collars, no-bark collars (stim and spray), clicker training, target training, and head collars.
