Dear friends,
On Sunday, we celebrated our first-ever social event with the SGI-USA Buddhists. Everyone had a great time, and the weather was perfect.
You can check out photos from our Fall Festival here, and watch a recap video here, courtesy of Mr. Vidal Tapia (thank you!). And a huge thank you to everyone from Old St. Mary’s and SGI-USA who helped make our first gathering such a success. We’re already looking forward to the next one!
In this weekend's bulletin, Angie Campone shares about how getting involved in the community of Old St Mary's has been a guiding light for her family. Here's some of the ways you could have been involved at OSM outside of Mass and School this past week:
-
9:15 am Thurs, Sept 24 — Lectio Divina group
- 5 pm Sun, Sept 27 — Adult Open Gym
- 9:30 am Weds, Sept 30 — Our first "Space for Connection and Reflection" session with Claret Center Counselor Elizabeth Milman
- noon at 7 pm Weds, Sept 30 — Archdiocesan "Telling Your Faith Story" workshop
- 6:30 pm Weds, Sept 30 — "Blessed Are the Peacemakers" ecuemnical prayer service
Be sure to read this newsletter and the bulletin each and every week. Otherwise, you're going to miss out: we can't announce everything at the end of Mass!
Be sure to check out the graphics below. Please note two big things we want to make sure you know for this weekend:
-
Our annual Blessing of the Animals will be in the Michigan Avenue parking lot at 11 am on Sat, Oct 3. It's a fun and short event, perfect for inviting your non-Catholic pet-loving friends to join us. A special feature this year: we'll have a genuine Franciscan with us: Br. Praveen Gabriel, OFM Cap, our student intern from the Catholic Theological Union!
-
Our annual Oktoberfest is at 6:30 pm on Sat, Oct 3. It's an important community-building and fundraising event for the School's Blue Ribbon Fund. You can buy tickets in advance, but walk-ins are also welcome. This year promises to be an authentic German experience, so be sure to join us!
And 3 other pieces of news:
-
There is a visitation 4-8 pm tonight for John Ornelas, father of parishioner Johnny Ornelas, at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd, Hobart, IN 46342. John's Mass of Christian burial will be at Assumption Church, 3530 Illinois St, Hobart, IN at 10 am followed by burial at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. Contact the funeral home at 219-942-2109 for more information. May the angels lead John to paradise.
-
We plan to offer hospitality during the Chicago Marathon 9:30 am - 2 pm on Sun, Oct 11. We're still looking for a few volunteers to stand at the table on the sidewalk from 12:30-2 pm to greet passers-by and tell them that yes, the donuts, coffee, and free restrooms are for their use. If you can help, please contact Patti Murphy.
- As our new Social Justice Committee gets up and running, be on the lookout for more opportunities to serve our neighbors, such as our next Catholic Charities Dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
It's an exciting time to belong to the community of Old St. Mary's!
Autumn blessings!
Rich
