MOUNTAIN HOLLYDAYS - TIS' THE SEASON TO CELEBRATE OUR COMMUNITY
|
|
Can we all just agree that 2020 is weird? We need some good tidings and cheer. Let’s spread some joy this holiday season!
Traditionally, Mountain Hollydays has focused on events, sales and happenings between Thanksgiving and Christmas. With fewer events this year, we are going to be branching out!
Our ultimate goal with this seasonal guide is to promote buying local and offering fun ways to support our local businesses this holiday season.
If you have an event or sale planned, great! Let us know about it! No events or sales? Let us know about something unique you offer. This doesn’t have to be a discount or special promotion (although it can be if you want to put something together). What would you like customers to know about your offerings?
|
|
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Offering takeout or delivery? Let’s help people know they have options! Do you have any special deals for people who choose this option (a percent off with minimum order, candy cane thrown in with every order in December, special pricing for take-out orders, etc.
Do you have a holiday promotion (or do you want to put one together)?
For example...
- Buy one, get one deals on winter/holiday items
- “Like” or “Follow” one of your social accounts and get a discount or something small (or be entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate).
- A featured cocktail or menu item you want to highlight for the holidays (peppermint mochas or milkshakes?)
- Curated holiday packages or products to feature…holiday books / holiday wine with tasting notes / holiday baking sets / spa sessions with holiday inspired essential oils – the sky is the limit!
- Special product or service only offered from Thanksgiving to Christmas: a special graphic tee, a special jewelry piece, a special service like free shipping or gift wrapping.
What new ways are you offering your products/services to customers this winter? For example...
- Special patio seating or covered spaces for customers this winter.
- Selling online? – let us know how we can help direct people to your store (in person or online) and share a featured product.
Events, sales and happenings (of course!)
These are just a few ideas – we would love to see what you come up with! We are happy to bounce ideas around as well – just shoot us an email or give us a call.
This year, we are using Mountain Hollydays as a way to celebrate those things that don’t make headlines. Help us add to the merriment and share something special about your business or organization.
Please provide the information you wish to share in this year’s Mountain Hollydays guide by Wednesday,
November 18th at 5pm.

Winter festival to focus on ice sculptures, family fun, and outdoor-recreation activities amid COVID-19
We are preparing to celebrate 56 years of the McCall Winter Carnival this 2021. This year's festival dates are January 29, 2021 - February 7, 2021. While the essence of Winter Carnival will remain unchanged, many events will be altered to align with public health and safety best practices due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Carnival-goers can expect to enjoy snow sculptures, vendors, family fun, outdoor recreation and the traditional small-town charm of McCall.
“At its core,” says McKenzie Kraemer with the McCall Area Chamber, “Winter Carnival was started to get people outside, break the cabin fever, and build community. This is exactly what you will find this year, and something we could all definitely use.”
Some things will look different in 2021. Events including the Children’s Torchlight Parade, Mardi Gras Parade, firework shows, beer garden, and Main Stage music will all be put on hold due to COVID-19.
“While we know it is disappointing to not be able to host these events,” says Kraemer, “they are simply going to have to wait until we are clear of the pandemic.”
Large gatherings are of particular concern and the with our commitment to the health and safety of residents and visitors mean that changes needed to be made for the 2021 Carnival, coupled with our commitment to promote our local businesses in the safest way possible this year.
We are working in partnership with The Go Agency, a Boise-based event company, to continue to work on new, safe events to incorporate into the 2021 McCall Winter Carnival. This also includes partnering with the numerous local businesses and nonprofits that host events during the 10-day festival.
By participating as a sponsor or by donating a prize or raffle item, your organization will benefit from extended exposure through media campaigns and promotional efforts of the Winter Carnival as well as have an on-site presence at many of the events and activities planned this year. We will also be reaching out to historical sponsors to touch base on changes and find new ways to partner.
We have many levels of sponsorship including our signature “snowflake” sponsorships, event sponsorships, and sculpture sponsorships allowing you to select the level of participation that best meets your needs. Please let us know how we can customize a sponsorship package to fit your business goals!

Getting back to our roots....some history on Winter Carnival for us!
The inspiration for the Winter Carnival dates back to 1924, when McCall created the Payette Lake Sports Carnival, named after the large, picturesque, glacier-carved, sandy-beached body of water that provides much of McCall’s summer and fall allure. The Sports Carnival existed for several years before becoming an ice-breakup contest, which ended when gambling became illegal in 1941.
In 1965, the community rallied to bring back a winter festival to help promote the area’s pristine skiing. This effort led to the first annual McCall Winter Carnival at Brundage Mountain Resort, which Ski Magazine has claimed is home to “the best powder in North America.” The two-day event included slalom racing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and snowshoe and snowcat races.
Since then, the gala has grown into the popular, 10-day festival known today. The McCall Winter Carnival continues to attract visitors and amateur and professional snow sculptors from throughout the world.

PAYETTE LAKES PROGESSIVE CLUB'S FESTIVAL OF TREES GOES VIRTUAL FOR 2020
|
|
In 2019, the Progressive Club's inaugural year hosting the McCall Festival of Trees, raised over $11,000 towards community scholarships and grants!
While 2020 has been challenging to say the least, it certainly has not reduced the need in our community for philanthropic grants and higher education scholarships for local area high school seniors. The Progressive Club's motto states, “No task is too great for those that are willing,” and that includes Festival of Trees! Instead of the traditional format of the event, we are taking the Festival virtual in order to offer beautiful holiday décor, get everyone in the holiday spirit, and most importantly -- raise funds to support the Progressive Club’s important goals.
This year, the group will offer spectacular Christmas wreaths, décor, gifts, and fresh trees through an online fundraising auction. The holiday décor auction will begin Saturday, November 14th and conclude on Saturday, November 28th at 8pm.
Be an event sponsor
Save time this year and support the Progressive Club through a $500 sponsorship. Your charitable donation dollars give you online advertising on the virtual auction site home page and a ‘Thank You Sponsors!’ page. Show off your brand, holiday specials, or share why you support the Progressive Club.
Donate an item for the auction
What better way to get in the holiday spirit than creating a festive wreath, small tree or other décor piece that raises funds for our community? Put your creativity to good use and make a holiday decor showstopper.

VOTE ON PUBLIC ART FOR 2ND STREET - YOUR INPUT IS IMPORTANT!
|
|
A Message from the Artists:
Earlier this year, Jamie and I at Laidlaw Design Co. won a contract with the city to create a functional art piece for downtown McCall on 2nd Street. This summer, we launched our first phase of public outreach, asking you– the community– what type of public art you'd like. The results were functional art that's beautiful, culturally relevant, and focused on our outdoors. From this feedback, we have commenced our 2nd phase of public art outreach. Now we put forth three proposals for you– the public– to consider. They can be viewed at our kiosks downtown on 2nd street, in the attached document, or on our website:
We hope at least one of these proposals speaks to you, and we'd love to hear your thoughts. You can provide your feedback via our online survey (at the bottom of our proposals page from the above link).
More can be found at www.iheARTmccall.com if you'd like to know more about us as designers or information on the project.
Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you!
Erica and Jamie

Let’s read it together, as a community. We can talk about it over tea and coffee, on neighborhood walks, and in spontaneous conversations.
Read more and register here today. A free collaborative project sponsored by Luminaire and Community Hub McCall, partnering with McCall Arts and Humanities Council, Barn Owl Books & Gifts, and the McCall, New Meadows, Donnelly, and Cascade Public Libraries.
